Black Mesa: Getaway - Dunkelschwamm

Here is a beautiful map with a really well done intro sequence. According to the map description it is abandoned which is a shame since what has been completed is pretty good and well polished. SCMapDB page Author: Vector-T (now known as I-ka) Date of release: 2019 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Black Mesa: Getaway (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | April 10, 2023 | 6990 characters      Black Mesa Getaway is a seemingly abandoned map by I-ka, or VectorT. To save time off the wall of the text that's about to unravel, I will begin with my summarized thoughts: Black Mesa Getaway, while unfinished, offers a slice of tense, simple, beautiful gameplay that utilizes many decisions which I principally disagree with in ways which I subjectively agree with. If you're uninterested in deeper analysis, I'll see you at the bottom paragraph.      Let's unpack that: first, Black Mesa Getaway is unfinished. Indeed, Black Mesa Getaway is a map which con

We start in an incredibly dark room and press a button to begin the map proper, after which we are treated to some very nice cutscenes. We have a great pan down a hallway with a fight between human grunts and alien slaves frozen in time, electrical arcs and bullets frozen in the air. Then I actually decide to read the map description and I find out that this is the author's first ever map.      After the intro (complete with some G-man voice lines!) we start in a small room, we both head right int

Beach Experience - Dunkelschwamm

Hot sand, cool waves, a Mai Tai and/or Piña Colada, these are things that would complete a fun experience at the beach. This map is loosely themed on the Normandy beach landings of World War II and for some reason feature lots of closed off hallways. SCMapDB page Author: MysticMDT Date of release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Beach Experience (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 14, 2023 | 4889 characters      Beach Experience is a map with a lot of bunkers and trenches, but only one beach. Storm a beach, steal war documents, and explode turrets! Is it any good?      The map is broken into a few recurring elements: combat with HECU helmed by an heavy weapons grunt, taking down over-HPed grunts standing beside mounted machineguns they are ostensibly firing, combatting giant "anti-air" (and yet unable to aim up or down) turrets, and stealing war documents. To approach this, the players are equipped with weapons according to one of four

It had a beach in the first section but the rest was some winding mineshaft style hallways and a couple of bunkers.      Players are dropped off into a room with some class selection doorways around. We have Sniper, Medic, Soldier, Demoman. All players start with 5 grenades and a crowbar, the medic and demoman get the uzi and shotgun for weapons while the sniper gets a crossbow and the soldier gets an M16, mp5, and rocket launcher

Resident Evil: The Awakening - Dunkelschwamm

There are many Resident Evil maps in the Sven map database, but this is the first and has the highest score (of the time of writing this paragraph). Players are Bravo squad, the lost and dead STARS member seen at the beginning of the first Resident Evil, can we overturn canon and survive? SCMapDB page Author: mrfranswa Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Resident Evil: The Awakening (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | October 9, 2022 | 5271 characters      Resident Evil: The Awakening is a map that very appropriately answers the question: What if Resident Evil were Sven Co-op? The result is the marriage of two distinct flavors of jank, some systems that fall apart in tandem, and some middling horror-action in some middling mansion environments.      The map begins with the players in a spawn area where they must choose a class from three (the one with the gun and the medkit is the only acceptable answer- this class system is silly and unbal

So I dipped my toes into the Sven Co-op Resident Evil maps by doing the ones with the lowest STARS ratings first, now we are jumping to the map with the highest rating. It's certainly better, but it is essentially a big maze with an item hunt while players have to deal with ammo and guns that don't respawn and some limiting character classes.      Players start off in a big metal box with some buttons, the problems start early as the difficulty buttons s

Resident Evil: The Aftermath - Dunkelschwamm

There are a lot of Resident Evil maps for Sven Co-op and they mostly follow the same formula of exploring a mansion. The 'Aftermath' part of the title implies this map is a sequel but it is unclear what the previous map could be. SCMapDB page Author: James Smith Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Resident Evil: The Aftermath (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | September 1, 2022 | 3777 characters      Resident Evil: The Aftermath is an attempt at a Resident Evil map that barely replicates the broad strokes of what one might think Resident Evil is from vague memories of having played up to the the first zombie in the first Resident Evil, not figuring out what to do, turning the game off, and then later seeing art of Nemesis and looked up some Resident Evil art and thought it was cool. I know that's oddly specific, but it just really gives me that impression.      The spawn area requires players choose a class. The classes are kni

He remembers the Resident Evil maps being pretty bad and I only remember vague impressions of them. So I thought I would start with the one with the lowest STARS rating.      The map starts off in a red chamber with a locked door and a hole high up in the wall. I think this is supposed to force at least two players to play but with the climbing mechanic that was added into Sven Co-op later you don't need two players to ge

Alien Fight - Dunkelschwamm

Alien fight is a map about fighting xenomorphs, the aliens from the famous movie franchise Alien. Players go from room to room fighting them in waves. They fight aliens a lot in it. When you hear "fight aliens" you might be thinking of a lot of games with aliens stalking interesting settings for you to fight in. But: have you ever fight a bunch of alien xenomorph bullsquids in a smallish box room coming out of a spawner until you find your way out into another smallish box room with respawning xenomorph bullsquids by finding the z-fighting on a breakable wall? What about if you did that… four times?!      I feel like it's very rare that I play an unofficial (or, often, official for that m

There is a mounted gun here that is controlled by one half of the nearby terminal, it's a little funky to use. There are three ways to go here, on the left side of the stretched out credits texture is an infantry class teleporter and on the right are demolitions and medic. The way the classes work is that players spawn with nothing, or at least they should, sometimes I or my teammate would spawn with a medkit, but that disappeared for me. The teleporters put players in a room with another teleporter and y

Nagafens Lair - Dunkelschwamm

This is a map based on Everquest, something I have zero experience with. At the very least the map is dripping in fantasy aesthetic, from the level design to the custom models, the map reminds me of playing Dungeons and Dragons. Teleporter-based class selection informs which kind of character you'll be, though the icon of the helmet gives the player a crowbar, a wrench, a pistol, and a medkit, all of which are pretty crucial to proceeding. My teammate chose different classes but seemed constantly hurting for utility.      The actual gameplay starts confusingly with a lava flow scene devoid of scale or grandeur, barred are nerfed with invisible walls. I had really high hopes for this map and I was disappointed. Now, to be fair, apparently this is the mappers first map. For somebody's first map ever, it could definitely be worse.      Overall, the map is short. It starts the player off in an area with some NPCs with custom models in a corner that my teammate killed immediately. I don't really know what was going on with those. On the other side of the room are holes with symbols above them. This map is based on Everquest, and I don't know shit about Ev

Search N Destroy - Dunkelschwamm

There are a lot of really cool and interesting things done in this map that are not found in other maps like having an open world, player classes, and non-linear objectives. Some mechanics work better than others but it all comes together to make a truly unique map. SCMapDB page Author: Hezus Date of final release: 2020 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Search N Destroy (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 8, 2022 | 6589 characters      Search n Destroy is an objective based control point map which takes place in a desert-y setting reminiscent of Counter Strike's Dust maps with Opposing Forces grunts as the main enemies. To complete the map the players must plant C4 on several enemy weapons caches, find weapons throughout the map and return them to the base, conquer and defend 4 control points, and finally defend the spawn base from an enemy attack. During the offense portion of this you must also contend with grunts being dropped off by respawning Osprey

Players start in a military base on the outskirts of a large middle eastern town. There are 6 piles of crates to destroy and four areas you have to capture. The gameplay is a scavenger hunt to find the objectives and also the four unlockable weapons.      When the map first starts out players spawn in a room with instructions and difficulty voting buttons. Any difficulty higher than the lowest has a cap on respawns and let me say I can not imagine playing this map without infinite respawns. There is
