Robo's 1 Hour Map - Dunkelschwamm

Image
It seems that making a map in an hour is something of a trend among Sven Co-op mappers. This one is from Robootto, an infamous author known for making strange and unplayable maps. Thankfully this map is, as the map description says, almost playable. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Robo's 1 Hour Map (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | September 17, 2022 | 2698 characters      If "1 hour map" legitimately means Robootto made this map in one hour, it'd explain a lot. Robo's 1 Hour Map is a walkthrough map that is mostly broken and sloppily thrown together. Textures exist where they shouldn't be, level geometry is jank, combat is a mess, the progression is broken, and there is no real map end. I do not recommend.      It should be noted that this review is primarily of the unlit version of this map. However, I think I've played enough of the version shown here to know that, despite

Only Fun - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Only Fun contains zombies and a Big Momma and has little, if any, fun. The spawn points are also placed poorly causing players to die on spawn quite a lot. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Only Fun (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | April 23, 2022 | 2011 characters      Only Fun is a quintessentially Robootto Robootto map. It hits all of the hallmarks: it's not fun, when you realize what the gimmick is you question whether Robootto legitimately hates the players, it's painfully ugly to look at, and the overall feeling when you're done is that you have wasted your precious time which can never ever be returned.      Players begin in a chamber which connects to a winding same-textured corridor maze full of Barneys. At the opposite end of this corridor is the secondary spawnpoint, which supplies players with tripmines and a gauss rifle. Back at the other chamber, breaking the floor drops the player

Modern Glass Box - Dunkelschwamm

Image
This may surprise you, but this map is a glass box. I don't know about 'modern' but there is absolutely a glass box in this map. Breaking out of the box starts an unstoppable cycle of death. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Modern Glass Box (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 26, 2022 | 1974 characters      Robootto strikes again with a map which is finely tuned to distasteful design. Modern Glass Box is a downward vertical map wherein the players' objective is to destroy the ground beneath them, several times, via any means available to them. At first this is chainguns, but as they break through the layers of glass floors they come across explosives as well. The entire chamber is glass, the breakable floors are glass. If you couldn't see the layers beneath the player and know Robootto's shenanigans you might not know that you need to shoot through the glass floor because it h

Messuhalli - Dunkelschwamm

Image
If you can't tell from the above picture, this map is supposed to be an Olympic ski jump. The ski jump doesn't work and can actually trap players in it. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Messuhalli (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 6, 2022 | 1367 characters      Robootto is pretty good at making me feel like an idiot for playing his stuff. This map is a prime example of this.      This map consists of one large room, a (seemingly?) impenetrable glass room on a mezzanine, a big vat of inconspicuous white substance, and a slide from a platform into said vat. Climbing up a ladder gets the player onto the platform, and then jumping onto the slide gets you trapped inside of it because the top surface of the slide is intangible. The only way out is death. I was certain, the moment I saw this map, that the slide would be fucky in a way I wouldn't predict. I was right. I thought it wouldn't

Karpaselamaa - Dunkelschwamm

Image
The map author, Robootto, has a tendency to make nonsense maps. This map has a nonsense name (or at least I could not figure out the meaning) and is a simple objectiveless rats style map. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Karpaselamaa (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 22, 2022 | 3180 characters      I often wonder if Robootto was an elaborate troll or just a truly baffling mapper whose design somehow accidentally hated the player.      Karpaselamaa is a "rats style" map which in this instance means it includes LARGE objects. By this metric, some other Robootto maps may be considered rats maps too.      In this case the large objects are a television, a glass of water, a remote control, and a houseplant. You'll notice that I didn't say an environment- usually a rats map is like "bedroom" or "kitchen" or "garage" or something. Nah, this is Robootto. You

Jump Fall - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Jump Fall is a map with one spot where you jump and then fall. The rest of the map is a somewhat broken jumble of things. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Jump Fall (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 15, 2022 | 1583 characters      I don't even know what to say about Robootto's maps anymore. They just unfold and unfold and unfold just enough for you to believe there's going to be a light at the end of the tunnel, but it's always just confusion and disappointment.      This map is no different.      After a series of confusing events whose events seem untied to one another, mostly involving finding out which spawn room you appeared in at different ends of the map, other times involving finding hordes of enemies. Sometimes you find big troves of ammo.      After aimlessly wandering there's nothing much left to this map. I really wish I had more to say, but this map is just an amorp

Indokiina - Dunkelschwamm

Image
This map set has two maps in it. One is a hallway with some rooms off to the side and the other is a room with some random junk scattered around. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Indokiina (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 9, 2022 | 2168 characters      This is a review of two maps together: indokiina and indokiina2_chaosslum. indojapan, also by Robootto, is supposedly a sequel to these. If you can understand any way that makes sense I invite you and strongly urge you to explain some of this to me.      indokiina is a series of outdoor rooms connected by an outdoor hallway. Weapons are strewn about, some brushes with novelty textures adorn the walls of the rooms, some broken zombies with the Gina model and respawning headcrabs keep you company. The whole thing is lit in this weird sickly dim light that makes everything kind of off-putting and uneasy. The first room has what appears to be a crudely

Ice Grind - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Ice Grind is a map where I assume players are supposed to grind the rail shown in the above picture. There is also a button that causes explosions. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Ice Grind (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 7, 2022 | 728 characters      Ice Grind is a Robootto map, which means that most of the fun is figuring out what you're in for. This map doesn't have much to reveal, but it's certainly an oddity while it lasts- a simple slippery ice rail which passes through tripmines to an alcove with a button which causes an explosion in the middle.      There is nothing more to this map to discuss, so I'll go ahead and end my review here.      I don't recommend it for anything. It's a nothing. Pros: It's over quickly. Cons: It's a nothing. Score: 0.1 / 10

Fun Land - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Fun Land is a rocket launchpad and tower. Anybody can easily mistake this map for being some sort of land that is fun. This it not the case. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Fun Land (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 30, 2021 | 1424 characters      A poorly textured, poorly brushed space shuttle moves up and down like an elevator. A nondescript building sits forlorn nearby. An inaccessible mountainside tunnel contains two incomprehensible contraptions. From one end of the map the other end is consumed by the black void of unchecked draw distance. After marching for a minute down a blackened tunnel you find only a dead end. Not that it matters- you only could have gotten here by tampering with the server's gravity.      Why, you ask?      Robootto, that's why. We do not know why he does what he does. We do not know what crosses through his mind as he decides to publish these half-baked dood
