Zombie Squad - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Suit up squad, it's time to go fight human grunts that this map calls zombies. This map is a horde map taking place in a burned out urban block, supposedly there are points to capture but I didn't see any. SCMapDB page Author: cyberdaemon Date of release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Zombie Squad (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | July 17, 2023 | 2601 characters      Zombie Squad is a well detailed horde map wherein grunts and hwgrunts (and, like, an assassin) swarm the players from every angle. Thankfully, within the details of the ruins are plenty of weapons, and a reasonable smattering of HEV and health pickups.      The description makes it sound like maybe my experience with the map is broken. There were, like, 3 soldiers which looked like zombies in the map. I think far more were meant to be zombies? Also, the MOTD makes it sound like there's some funny control point business, like there's an objective to the map. Far as I can tell a

Big Cave 2 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Climb down into a cave system with a lot of science hallways and industrial rooms. The cave itself certainly is big and the map ends once it is explored in a linear fashion. SCMapDB page Author: amckern Date of release: 2019 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Big Cave 2 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 13, 2023 | 5354 characters      Big Cave 2 is an action walkthrough map for Sven Co-op featuring immense scale, impressive brushwork and textures, and some hit-or-miss gameplay.      The idea is that there's a huge base built into the side of a cave. The map is very vertical, with players descending deeper and deeper into the big cave and the base which burrows throughout. The cave is of truly immense scale, and the brush and texture work are fantastic. Not only are the natural structures some of the finest I've seen in the goldsrc engine, but the interiors of the base really manage to make industrial, grungy, brutalist subterranean complex

The Community Map Project - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Featuring 15 authors, 7 years of development (or 12 depending on how you define 'development time'), and 7 individual maps, The Community Map Project is a beast of a map set. Somewhat unrelated, but this post taught me that Blogger has limits to how many labels a post can have, a max of 20, when I was tagging this post I was forced to leave out 'series' and 'Black Mesa'. Borg Cube - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Borg Cube is a Star Trek themed map taking place inside a Borg spaceship, the famous Cube. The map uses a whole slew of new textures and models to recreate the ship and even gives players a phaser. SCMapDB page Author: Agamemnon Date of final release: 2007 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Borg Cube (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 30, 2021 | 4230 characters      Borg Cube is a two-map walkthrough set fraught with action, adventure, traps, and switch puzzles. It plays fast and loose with the themes in fun and silly ways, letting you know right off the bat with the presence of xenomorphs that this map does not take the lore seriously.      That's not to say Borg Cube isn't made with care, though. Each environment is crafted into a unique feel unlike what is typical of Half-Life mods. I love the outdoor environments and techno-nonsense throughout. It's a feast for the eyes most of the time, when you aren't just scouring mazes of industrial

101 Grunts - Dunkelschwamm

Image
101 Grunts is a very early and simple map with long hallways full of human grunts. You fight a total of 101 enemies, hence the name. Due to the numerical nature of the name of this map series it is the first map that appears on an alphabetical listing of all maps on the map database. SCMapDB page Original mod author: Jonathon L. Gower Conversion author: CubicVirtuoso Date of original mod release: 1999 Date of final Sven Map release: 2008 Maps in package: 3 Map review of 101 Grunts (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 27, 2021 | 1195 characters     101 Grunts is a fairly simple, straight-forward map about fighting 101 grunts (and some turrets). The set suffers from a lack of ammo early on, though playing with large groups may mitigate this. Beyond this, the set delivers on a linear succession of corridors and rooms full of grunts to engage in deadly combat. By the end I found my bloodlust satiated, but fail to remember many memorable moments upon reflection.
