Richard Boderman - GrandmasterJ

Image
Here is a map that is famous in the Sven Co-op community. Players must fight hordes of enemies in a huge arena with lots of vertical elements. Fun custom models representing members of the community (a recent addition, apparently), a kick-ass helicopter, plus music and voiceover really brings this whole map together in an amazing way. SCMapDB page Author: Aurora, JPolito, Puchi, Hydeph Date of release: 2008 Maps in package:1 Map review of Richard Boderman (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | March 25, 2023 | 4509 characters      Richard Boderman is a pretty famous map and I have just reached the 300th map reviewed milestone so I rustled up a third person and tackled the famous boss battle the map is named after.      The map is a huge circular arena. There are cliffside ramps up the face of the sides and in the central mountain as well as ladders allowing lots of verticality in the map. Various trench systems and bunkers hide supplies and provide cover from the

Psyko - GrandmasterJ

Welcome to the wonderful world of colors. There are ten doorways to ten different color coded puzzle/fights and one final boss room. This map has outstanding visuals. SCMapDB page Author: Lemonsoda Date of final release: 2010 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Psyko (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | November 20, 2022 | 3917 characters      Psyko is a colorful map with ten separate areas with a color theme (green for slime, pink for pigs, light blue for clouds, dark blue for water, etc.) and a final boss battle against the color master. The visuals are striking and really make the themes pop. From start to finish the map is an absolute charm to play and although there is a lot of combat that gets repetitive at times there are also fun puzzles to solve so the gameplay is not one note.      The map is pretty simply designed, players spawn in a room with two doors on each wall and two trap doors in the floor. One door will randomly unlock and players will then clear that

Toysoldiers - GrandmasterJ

Shrink down extra small and fight for control of the bedroom as tiny green men. This map is highly reminiscent of old classic Army Men games like Sarge's Heroes. SCMapDB page Author: RaptorSKA Date of final release: 2019 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Toysoldiers (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | September 11, 2022 | 6153 characters      Toy Soldiers is a rats map with the army man theme. I love rats maps, something about being small and fighting to the death in a huge room really appeals to me. With the extra effort of custom models (reskins to be either green, tan, grey, or blue) the map is even more charming.      Before we get to the fighting players get to spawn inside the house at normal size. We can look outside at the lawn, the car parked in the driveway, some impressive bushes that most people probably won't notice. It's a fun start to the map, using the play set with the glow sprite will start the map properly. The family is out on vacation,

Attack & Defend - GrandmasterJ

Image
The map works exactly as described, first players must attack and then players must defend. The secret to attacking is finding the small black boxes with red lights on them and destroying them. The secret to defending is to hold on to your butts! SCMapDB page Author: NIPPER Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Attack & Defend (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | May 8, 2022 | 4941 characters      I love Attack Defend. I used to play it a lot back in the day and when I got a say in what the next map would be I would say this one. The map is frenetic action through and through. It completely embodies what I remember as the best part of old school Sven Co-op, crazy chaotic action with a bunch of people.      The map starts off with players attacking a fortified hill. There is a trench at the top with two bunkers in the hill below, charging the trench at the top requires running past these bunkers which fill up endlessly with soldiers. There is

Sector E - Dunkelschwamm

Image
On first glance Sector E is another bland retread of Black Mesa, but on actually playing it it feels much different. The map looks great, plays well, and includes small details that make it stand out from the plethora of Black Mesa themed maps. SCMapDB page Author: Keen Date of final release: 2010 Maps in package: 3 Map review of Sector E (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | April 16, 2022 | 3642 characters      Sector E is a large walkthrough series of maps by prolific Sven Co-op mapper Keen. It follows the Black Mesa theme, though does interesting things with it throughout. Each map is decently lengthy and packed full of action.      That's first thing I want to talk about: the action. I feel like Sector E manages multi-faction monster battles better than any other Sven map I've played up to this point. Sector E manages battles cinematically, while still making them feel natural and dropping the player into the middle of massive firefights while giving t

Access Point - Dunkelschwamm

Access Point is a standalone mod converted to work in Sven Co-op. The whole goal of the map is to escape from Black Mesa. SCMapDB page Original mod authors: Dr. Orange Conversion authors: Mikk Date of original mod release: 2018 Date of final Sven Map release: 2021 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Access Point (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by dunkelschwamm | January 16, 2022 | 4920 characters      Access Point is a singleplayer mod that I have never played by (the, I'm presuming, mysterious) Dr Orange. Access Point for Sven Co-op is a port of that singleplayer mod by mikk. And boy, what a port it is.      Access Point is a fast-paced singleplayer map which acts as a vertical slice of all of the action in the first half-dozen-or-so chapters of Half-Life. There are headcrabs, houndeyes, barnacles, vortigaunts, and grunts battled through fast and satisfying mini-battles throughout the exploration of the locale. Said locale is one of those Black Mesa industrial areas, fit with

Shanghai Harbor - Dunkelschwamm

Image
This map is all about fighting the mafia (triads?) in China. It's got the Shanghai aesthetic down pretty well and a very well made harbor. SCMapDB page Author: MysticMDT Date of final release: 2010 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Shanghai Harbor (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 12, 2021 | 2077 characters      Shanghai Harbor is a good ol' map. It's a straight-forward walkthrough map with bosses placed throughout, themed areas between them, an overarching theme, a clear goal, clear routes of progression, clear enemies and a clear threat, a clear sense of completion, and great visual style throughout.      Battle your way through a palatial harbor castle full of blackops grunts and female assassins, a sewer system full of mutant gonomes and headcrabs, and the harbor full of snipers. Take out each of the mob bosses along the way and stock up on an increasingly versatile mercenary weapons as you forge your way through the map. Updating spawn po

Space Viking 1 - Dunkelschwamm

The Space Viking is a space ship sailing through the stars and piloted by Mr. Friendly. Players must protect the ship from invaders and eventually track down the culprits to extract what was stolen. Take on the role of guarding the Space Viking spaceship as it is attacked by alien pirates seeking the precious cargo.      One thing that stands out about Space Viking to me is its resemblance to a series like Marathon or Halo, with the player beginning in a spaceship and then forcing back an alien invading force throughout the ship, culminating in chasing their attacking force back to the

There is a large view screen where the player can see a nicely done warp-speed effect. As soon as I stepped out of the spawn room I had my pants charmed off. I don't expect story in my Sven maps other than some paragraph in the MotD, so it stands out even more when it is done during play and it was done really, really well.      The ship is then boarded b
