Crablegs - GrandmasterJ

Image
This map was built to play a way that Sven never really supported. So it was abandoned. It's a box (or two) full of headcrabs for a project that was cancelled due to the main concept not working out. SCMapDB page Author: Socrates Date of release: 2000 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Crablegs (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | March 11, 2023 | 1481 characters      This map consists of two rooms, each with the shallowest puddle in the middle in which headcrabs pour into endlessly via a hole high up in the wall. There is another platform up around where the headcrabs appear, it even connects the rooms which are otherwise cut off from each other. There is no way up there unless players want to create a tower.      Players start with crowbar, medkit, and revolver. Then they get buried in headcrabs. If I've learned anything from this map it is that headcrabs can be real dangerous if you need to fight 50 of them at once.      Also, we don't have flashl

Zoo (by Killer99) - GrandmasterJ

Image
This map is a zoo (not to be confused with the other zoo map made by Icewold) condensed down into a hallway. There are only eight exhibits but the whole thing is interactive. SCMapDB page Author: Killer99 Date of final release: 1999 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Zoo (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | July 8, 2022 | 1438 characters      The map is a simple hallway with windows on either side. All sorts of xen creatures spawn infinitely inside these rooms behind glass. At the far end is a grate on the floor, after breaking it (or in my case, standing on it), jump down into the hole which will break the glass on the zoo animals. They start spawning in immediately and don't really stop, players only start with basic pistol and 17 rounds and crowbar. My teammate and I had to cheat to make it back to the hole alive.      The hole leads to an underground water filled tunnel, the end of which leads to a room with a grate on the ceiling, shooting this grate makes the

Tuukkekovajatka - Dunkelschwamm

The map with the unpronounceable name is about a rocket ship. It kind of goes up but not all the way and it is very slow. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Tuukkekovajatka (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | May 30, 2022 | 1389 characters      Tuukkekovajatka is a robootto map and boy howdy is it a robootto map.      Alright, here's the gist of it: you start on a raft(?) floating in nonlethal lava(?) which you swim in to a ladder(?) which you climb up into a room(?) which houses a rocket(?) which you can fly up to another blue room(?) or if you prefer jump off early to get to the pink platform. As the map description says, the rocket unfortunately does not fly high enough to get into the flower room.      This entire map is very blocky, the lava room where the player starts makes no sense, the rocket is pretty ugly looking but hats off to robootto for making an evocative enough concave elevator rocket bru

Normall - GrandmasterJ

Image
Normall is a map series all about walking through hallways. Robootto, a mapper with a bad reputation, and RNG, a mapper with a good reputation, have teamed up to bring us these hallways. SCMapDB page Authors: Robootto, RNG Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 10 Map review of Normall (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | March 31, 2022 | 2679 characters      I've played a lot of maps made by this author, Robootto. All of his maps have a quality that is somewhere between bewildering amounts of incompetence and being trolled. So when I took a look at the map description 'Contains Hallways" and the screen shots of endless twisting hallways I guessed that this would be the absolute worst map series for Sven I've played yet.      It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. Yeah, I was right in that the whole map series is about walking down boring hallways where nothing happens most of the time. The hallways have mostly the same texture, along with th

Modern Glass Box - GrandmasterJ

Image
This may surprise you, but this map is a glass box. I don't know about 'modern' but there is absolutely a glass box in this map. Breaking out of the box starts an unstoppable cycle of death. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Modern Glass Box (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 26, 2022 | 1501 characters      Just as the map description says, players start off in a big glass box and have to break through it to get out. There are multiple levels of glass to break through with increasing health. There are miniguns here which help a lot but after we broke through the first level the miniguns were no longer able to be picked up. Without miniguns we had to resort to using explosives in close quarters to do any real damage. When we blew ourselves up we would respawn where the first level was, way above our current floor, we fell and took fall damage every time.      Eventually we broke through and j

Metsa0 - GrandmasterJ

Image
This map appears to be the opening sequence of a larger map set. Players spawn in the back of a truck, trapped with no hope of escape. If a player noclips out and uses a certain section of the truck's front bumper the truck will move to the other end of the tunnel it is in. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Metsa0 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 20, 2022 | 1320 characters      Players spawn trapped in the back of a truck. There is a gauss cannon here but nothing else. It is very boring and there is nothing to do.      Noclipping out of the truck reveals a long hallway. There are explosives on the sides that trigger enemies when they explode. It was only after my teammate persisted in trying to get the truck to move that the truck did actually start to move. Apparently he used the back bumper and that worked, the truck started moving. We tried getting the truck to move while inside it but that p

Little Fun Park - Dunkelschwamm

Image
There are plenty of Sven maps out there with no goal other than to have fun. This map is one of those but everything about it is slightly off. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Little Fun Park (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 13, 2022 | 3846 characters      Another three maps from Robootto's wacky brand of whimsy and anti-gameplay. All three maps require chiseling your way out of a destructible wall that is textured like a door to taunt you (in the third map it's the wall next to the door that's destructible so you end up wasting your time attacking the door if you're thinking of the previous maps. The destructible has way too much health to destroy unless you cheat or have all 16 players hammering on it at once. I'd recommend that you cheat, but I'd sooner recommend not playing the map at all.      After breaking your way out, in all three maps you're presented with th

Messuhalli - GrandmasterJ

Image
If you can't tell from the above picture, this map is supposed to be an Olympic ski jump. The ski jump doesn't work and can actually trap players in it. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Messuhalli (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 6, 2022 | 1457 characters      The map description for this map reads 'the snow is broken'. This is not quite true, the snow is intangible and that is not something done on accident. Perhaps the author couldn't make slippery snow and decided to just phase it out of existence. The result is that players will fall into a box they can not get out of. I suffered this fate and had to commit suicide to get out of it, my teammate fell into this trap later as well and I took the chance to laugh at his misfortune.      The whole map is one big room. There is a platform on one end of the room with the 'broken' ice slide and a cup of milk at the end. On th

Koti - GrandmasterJ

Image
This map has three rooms, a bedroom, a balcony/bathroom/closet area, and dark hallways that lead nowhere. The map description says as much. This map is very small. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Koti (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 22, 2022 | 1133 characters      Its hard for me to get mad at a map with a description as accurate as Koti. This map is a bedroom connected to dark empty rooms. The bedroom has what appears to be a bathroom complete with a window players can shatter and look outside. There is some sort of game system with a button on top players can use to open and close a cd tray. There is what appears to be a closet door that players can't reach due to the layout of the room. The top bunk is inaccessible due to being too close to the ceiling. The proportions were a little off, parts of the room were too cramped to even stand, and everything besides the room is devoid of anything

Jump Fall - GrandmasterJ

Image
Jump Fall is a map with one spot where you jump and then fall. The rest of the map is a somewhat broken jumble of things. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Jump Fall (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 15, 2022 | 3215 characters      Whenever I play maps made by Robootto I get one of two distinct feelings. One feeling is 'this is absolute garbage' and the other feeling, which this map gave me, is 'this map is made to piss me off'.      I downloaded the Big Robootto map pack which means I got not only this map, but two earlier versions of this map as well. So I got to see behind the curtain of this map, just a bit. There is a lot going on, there are a lot of rooms, and I have no clue how to get to any of them.      The map starts in one of two places, either a room with a load of weapons, a glass plug in the floor, a glass window, and a door. Or it starts in a room with respawning alien s

Goreship Splatterforest - Dunkelschwamm

Image
I am guessing the 'Goreship' from the map title is the white ship that reminds me a toilet in the above screenshot. I am guessing the splatterforest is the simple forest not pictured. There is also a Hell section of this map but I guess 'Goreship Splatterforest Hell' was too long. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Goreship Splatterforest (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 1, 2021 | 3443 characters      The best you can hope for with Robootto maps is a kind of strange sense of exploring something that couldn't so much to be have been made as much as to have happened. Goreship Splatterforest gives those vibes at times, and has a surprising sense of progression within. Room after room of seemingly infinitely respawning aliens. The players must escape from a bizarre structure which we could pretend is a ship, starting from the bathroom.      The player is equipped with only a pistol a

Fun Robo Run - GrandmasterJ

Image
The map description notes that the lift shaped like a hand in the above picture does not work. This really sets the tone for the quality of this map. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Fun Robo Run (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | December 31, 2021 | 1873 characters      This map is called fun robo run. It is not fun. It has nothing to do with robots. Running is optional.      The map description says that there is a broken lift in the map but a second spawn point bypasses it. This map is dominated by that problem. The broken lift does indeed stop all progress from the initial spawn point. I took the description to mean the spawn point updates during the map, I should have known better. If you spawn at the point before the lift, you'll have to kill yourself to get to the second spawn point. Which happens to be right in the middle of some gaps the player has to jump off later in the level. This causes play

Escalator Up - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Escalator up is a map focused around an escalator going up. There is an elevator at the end that takes players up to an assassin ambush. That's about it. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Escalator Up (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 30, 2021 | 1405 characters      You truly can never say, when it comes to Robootto, what kind of nonsense you'll get up to in his maps.      This map is an escalator that's… oddly made, but at the very least interesting to look at. There's no escalator down, so the player gets to ride up, open a door, and find that the map is ready to throw a curveball.      See, the map gives you a shotgun at spawn. "Why would I need a shotgun," you may ask aloud to nobody in particular, "in a map that is simply an escalator?"      Well, young reader, the answer is simple: the escalator leads to grave danger!      And by grave danger, I mean a hand

Fun Fun Fun - Dunkelschwamm

Image
This is a map that has nothing to do with the title. The map description is candid about the fact that the rooms are textureless, the hallways are pitch black, and there are a ton of monsters. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Fun Fun Fun (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by dunkelschwamm | December 12, 2021 | 942 characters     Fun fun fun is another Robooto map that exists to fulfill a simple niche in things Sven Co-op maps technically can do but never would have if Robooto hadn't made them. A large, featureless room is full of weapon pickups and constantly alien military. Surrounding rooms are full of darkness. Maneuver around and kill the enemies. To what end? To no end. It is endless. Endless fun?      Well, frankly I found the map tedious after a few minutes. If you're looking for a slaughter map that offers literally absolutely nothing but the tedium of endlessly slaughtering monsters then here it is. I think

Crazy Labyrinth - GrandmasterJ

Image
Long hallways with no branching paths are not labyrinths. This map is a long hallway with no branching paths. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Crazy Labyrinth (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by GrandmasterJ | December 12, 2021 | 1154 characters      I can't really be mad when the map description tells me exactly what the level is. It is a long hallway that has a vaguely interesting crystal thing at the end and the map is over. What the description doesn't say is that players are spawned so that they fall to their deaths unless they swim in a sliver of water in the middle. I thought that gimmick was kinda cool after I got what I was supposed to do. But then there is a door with entirely too much health. My teammate gave up trying to break it and looked for alternatives. I cheated and gave myself an egon gun to try. I eventually broke halfway through the ammo.      It's got a grand total of one interesting aspect

1742 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
1742 is a historically themed map complete with redcoats vs. . . .some other army, I don't remember. The map looks great but unfortunately does not seem to work properly. SCMapDB page Author: Sence Date of final release: 2011 Maps in package: 1 Map review of 1742 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 27, 2021 | 1824 characters     I'm really not sure what to say about this one. On the outside, it looks like an ambitious map: there are custom models, the map opens on a cutscene, there is a clear attempt to create a unique mod atmosphere and style all to itself, and there is a fairly impressive battle setup which plays out with varying levels of success.     As my friend and I attempted to play, one of us has a gun and the other did not- this made little difference, as he was unable to fire the weapon anyway. The battle commenced and we were separated by an invisible wall from the action. A wave of bluecoats overran the redcoats. After this action grind

SCMapDB page Author: Sence Date of final release: 2011 Maps in package: 1 Map review of 1742 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | November 27, 2021 | 1205 characters     This map looked promising, it has a bunch of fun new models for both enemies and guns, and it boasted five missions. I never got to play the other four missions because I think the first mission broke.     So my teammate and I eventually end up in a firing line, or behind it at least, I have a gun and he does not. Neither of us can approach the enemy army and we watch helplessly as our army and the enemy exchanges fire. I can't shoot the gun I have, he never actually gets a gun, and there is an invisible wall blocking us from even getting close to the other side. The enemy army kills us and we can't do anything about it.
