Sveney Christmas - Dunkelschwamm

Image
There are not a whole lot of options for Christmas themed Sven maps. Step into the shoes of Santa and drop presents (grenades) down the chimneys of the good children. SCMapDB page Authors: CubicVirtuoso Date of release: 2007 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Sveney Christmas (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 17, 2023 | 1918 characters      For a map made in two hours, this is a pretty complete idea. Players take grenades, fly around on a sleigh with train controls, and chuck the nades into 8 chimneys to complete the sequence. Each chimney is fairly easy to hit if you pull the sleigh up nice and close and take a couple throws to adjust aim. If you miss a bunch, don't worry, you can just fly your sleigh back to the cloud where you picked up your grenades.      The map has an effective aesthetic. The sleigh looks good, the cloud platform is perfectly functional, I think the street lamps on the cloud highlighting the grenade tables is a nice touch, and t

Broken Path - Dunkelschwamm

We travel back to Black Mesa to travel through the deteriorating facility and make our escape. The map is a fairly straightforward walkthrough map with some hazardous platforming areas to break up the combat. SCMapDB page Author: The-Real-Game Date of release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Bridge 2k (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | May 25, 2023 | 2966 characters      Broken Path is a short walkthrough map, apparently repurposed cut content from another series. The description says that it didn't really fit anywhere, and I'm sure that was a valid reason. I'll get into why in a moment!      The progress of the map revolves largely around taking out gonomes and zombies (occasionally other xenians) on your way through what I would call a liminal backrooms style area where function have no meaning. The architecture feels a lot like the corridors were found as they are and then attempts were made to make use of it. Navigating this

Classic Arcade First Person Shooter - Dunkelschwamm

Image
The map is Doom, the classic first person shooter is Doom. The map design and layout is very reminiscent of Doom, there are some pretty good new models and others that are not so good. SCMapDB page Author: BlueFeena Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Classic Arcade First Person Shooter (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 3, 2022 | 6425 characters      Classic Arcade First Person Shooter is a map which attempts to capture the spirit of Boomer Shooters before the Boomer Shooter revival invented the term Boomer Shooter. What did this tribute find before the revival was a thing?      Well, when it says Classic Arcade First Person Shooter, it means Classic DOS First Person Shooter- and by that, it means Doom 1. This map heavily utilizes architecture from the first Doom map, as well as E2M2, but otherwise mostly shakes things up with areas which evoke a Doom-ish feel. The textures are all very Doom-y, and there are custom models to enha

Adam's Dungeon - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Adam's Dungeon is a trap and monster filled maze with a boss fight and a difficult platforming room. With two players the map was difficult and took a long time to complete. SCMapDB page Author: Adambean Date of final release: 2009 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Adam's Dungeon (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 28, 2022 | 5867 characters      Adam's Dungeon is a maze map fraught with traps, monsters, and silly platforming bits that are far more aggravating than they need to be.      When first spawning in Adam's Dungeon, you must break into the dungeon proper by breaking down a wall with a crowbar. Once inside, you move through the dungeon and accept that trial-and-error deaths in traps will be part of your experience.      Tunnels throughout the maze contain utterly unmarked deathtraps which are sure-fire murder to whomever triggers them. I think this is the type of thing that's a lot more fun with lots of players, where there's

Chancars - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Chancars is a fun map with a big mostly open area with plenty of cars to drive around. There is a locked door players can unlock by ramping through a ring several times, but other than that there is no progression. It's just a map to have fun with. SCMapDB page Author: Gruntzz Date of final release: 2021 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Chancars (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 4, 2021 | 2126 characters      Chancars had a simple premise that I had no patience for. Ring the ring a certain number of times, but it's only reachable via a jump made by wacky cars. Unfortunately, as you ride there is an invincible gonome running around and killing the player. He gave me the vibe of the yeti from SkiFree, always showing up at a terrible time to grind the action to the halt with a one-hit-kill.      The main attraction of this map is the cars themselves: wacky themed func_vehicles await for the player to roll around and jump off ramps to the big ring in
