Alien Planet - GrandmasterJ

Image
This map is supposedly set on an alien planet but starts off in some brutalist YMCA and never really looks too alien. There are parts where players can see through cracks in the level. SCMapDP page Author: DeathBog Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Alien Planet (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | March 11, 2022 | 3636 characters      That was a rough map. The walls were paper thin and didn't always line up with each other. He had a noob box around the whole thing, I could see skybox through the gaps of the level.      Players get thrown into the map already taking damage from enemies. The map starts on a fade in so you can't even see what you are doing and you have to take hits. The room you start in looks like a plain swimming pool, I started a map called 'Alien Planet' and started in a swimming pool. If you stand at the water's edge and jump you can see parts of the map through the skybox. The pool is absolutely filled

Muumimaaliset - Dunkelschwamm

Image
The author of this map,Robootto, is Finnish. Sticking the map name into Google translate spits out 'Muumin valley'. Google the terms, it's some interesting Finnish culture, too bad the map looks like a gravel pit. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Muumimaaliset (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 26, 2022 | 1663 characters      This map is a weird one. A very strange looking zombie with a tremendous amount of health but a seeming inability to deal damage stalks players in a small, circular, bizarre field with some skewed crosses in one corner and a massive tower silo in another corner. A strange blob lurks within. Spend entirely too long with all of your weapons killing these creatures. There is no catharsis. Spend the rest of the map timer thinking about what you've done.      That's what's in store when you play Muumimalliset. There's some mention of the Moomin Valley in

Little Fun Park - GrandmasterJ

Image
There are plenty of Sven maps out there with no goal other than to have fun. This map is one of those but everything about it is slightly off. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Little Fun Park (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 13, 2022 | 5057 characters      So there are three maps here, little fun park, version 2, and mini. I started out in little fun park first and spawned in a dim room with grenades and a door. The door doesn't open. IT becomes apparent that we have to use grenades to open the door, but the door has a ludicrous amount of health. My teammate and I cheated and gave ourselves all the weapons and it took an absurd amount of damage to destroy the door and get out of the room. There is another room with a destructible door here. Thankfully it has less health but it's still annoying.      Out of the spawn room and in the park itself is a variety of strange things to look at. Ther

Indojapan - GrandmasterJ

Image
Indojapan is a strange map where players progress through thematically disconnected rooms in a big loop. It's difficult to tell where the map is supposed to begin and end since players spawn all over the place. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2007 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Indojapan (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 8, 2022 | 2111 characters      This map is a mess.      There are two spawn zones, one of which is at a sushi bar, where the map description says it starts, and the other in in a burning town. My teammate and I were both in different spawns and we had no clue how to get to each other or what was happening or where either of us were. We were pretty fast in deciding to noclip around and see what the whole map looked like. Imagine our surprise when we found a ton of different rooms.      It turns out the map is a bunch of rooms with teleporters in that chain all the rooms together. The sushi bar has a breakable secti

Icearena - GrandmasterJ

Image
Ice arena is a simple map that attempts to recreate a hockey rink. Due to limitations of the game engine and the author's modus operandi you can not actually play hockey in this map. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2002 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Icearena (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 8, 2022 | 1204 characters      This whole map is a simple attempt at recreating a hockey arena. There are draggable pucks that my teammate and I dragged into a goal, nothing happened. There is a hall off to the side that leads to an elevator and a really awful ladder going up to another hallway. At the end of this hallway is a last puck and a hole that will drop a player to their death.      Also there is a spawn point inside a goal, when the map first loaded my teammate was stuck in the net and had to suicide to get free, only to spawn in there again.      If you've read the description you would probably notice I didn't mention an o

Games of Mega Zone 6 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Despite the name, there are no games here. There are a few areas in which games can be, but they are mostly empty. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Games of Mega Zone 6 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 1, 2022 | 2084 characters      In typical Robootto fashion, this map meanders and fritters out shortly after an initial shock and confusion. It takes a moment to orient one's self to the world when thrust into it, in the middle of a hallway, with no clear direction where to go, and an uneven tone set by strange lighting and textures which couldn't cling coherently to any one theme.      Once you adjust and orient yourself to your surroundings, there's a kind of dadaist charm in how garish and inconsistent the environment is. There's this kind of spark there, a hope that the in-your-face laziness of the design is a statement and that there's some sort of deconstructionist art happe

Forgotten Secret Lab - GrandmasterJ

Image
The title of this map would bring to mind some sort of laboratory environment secreted away somewhere. Instead we get this stately looking building above with some odd rooms and halls around and inside of it. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Forgotten Secret Lab (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | December 30, 2021 | 2149 characters      This is the third Robootto map I've played tonight. The first two maps I thought were pretty good for Robootto. This map sucks.      Right off the bat you spawn in a tunnel with infinitely respawning zombies at one end. They don't swarm spawn, but they do swarm a hole to the next level and a completely nonfunctional ladder. Thankfully spawn has a weapons drop including a guass cannon so we could charge it up and jump to the next level. The enemies spawn right there though and they spawn a lot so actually doing it is easier said than done. That's the first room and

Cybertech Elevator - GrandmasterJ

Image
This map is tiny. The map description reads: " Try fitting a populated server in this.." which is pretty funny to imagine. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Cybertech Elevator (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | December 16, 2021 | 1209 characters      When I first spawned in I liked what I saw. The room was a little cramped but I thought the room was well put together. That is the end of the nice things I have to say about this map.      There are two doors to the elevator, one goes straight up and the other splits down the middle and slides to the sides. All three moving parts operate independently of each other and just start opening and closing a lot while we are trying to get into the cramped elevator. The elevator started going up in th middle of our attempts at navigating the door, it took a very long time for it to come back down. Then we had to do some crouching and jumping to fit two people

Rainforest - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Rainforest is no more than a couple of hallways made to look like a rainforest. There isn't much happening in the map. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Rainforest (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by dunkelschwamm | December 11, 2021 | 1136 characters      This is an intriguing Robooto map, I think. Its brushwork is incredibly creative, trying all sorts of different things to evoke a rainforest aesthetic. Some of these attempts are more successful than others, and the utter density of these different approaches creates a fairly inconsistent atmosphere.      The map itself appears to be nothing more than a brief facade for testing out these brushwork prototypes for a rainforest environment. Playability-wise, I don't think it's really all that worth checking out for players so I don't recommend playing or putting on a server. If you're a mapper you might be interested in seeing what things Robooto attempts

Rainforest - GrandmasterJ

SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Rainforest (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by GrandmasterJ | December 11, 2021 | 1038 characters      For a Robootto map it was interesting. It has no point, no real end game, and no goal. The environment design is pretty nice. If the textures were aligned properly then it would even be good environment design. In the screenshots there is a picture where there is a glowing rectangle on the ground. When I saw that in-game I assumed something had broken in an update to Sven, but now I see that was intentional and showcased. It's not good environment design to have sections of the floor glow in a rainforest.      Overall, unless you are looking for environmental inspiration or tricks to help in your own mapping this map is worthless, pointless, and boring.
