Breakfree 3 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Breaking the tradition of the previous two entries, number three ditches the elevator and goes for a straight up platforming map. Visit beautiful Wing Fortress from Sonic 2 and confront Eggman inside. SCMapDB page Author:Beather Date of release: 2007 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Breakfree 3 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | April 30, 2023 | 3066 characters      Breakfree is the third and, afaik, final chapter of the Breakfrees by Beather. You wouldn't think so without the map name, as aside from the Sonic reference there isn't much connecting it to the previous maps and their elevator gimmick. This is probably for the best, as it means this is the most playable of the breakfrees years later.      If you've played Wing Fortress Zone, the penultimate zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Sega Genesis/Mastersystem, you know what much of this will be. High winds blowing you around, fans that you hover above, bottomless pits, rotating platforms abov

Bossrush - GrandmasterJ

Image
The title gets us ready for boss after boss in some sort of a rush, but instead we have a bunch of teleporters to arenas filled with normal enemies with lots of health. There is also a button that needs two people to press it and that completely neuters the map. SCMapDB page Author: enuze Date of release: 2017 Maps in package:2 Map review of Bossrush (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | April 17, 2023 | 4276 characters      The whole idea behind this map is fighting a handful of enemies with really high health and that's pretty much it. After all the enemies are dead we get to fight some boss waves before the map ends. There is also a bonus map, I think we can get to it via a secret in the first map, but we didn't find it and instead manually changed level to it. The bonus level is much the same as the first, but all on one flat expanse of land.      So players start out in a room with a hallway we can't enter with a button above the doorway, and a

Robo's Disco - Dunkelschwamm

Image
The map description describes most of what happens in this map, I don't know what to say. In the screenshots there is a picture of the car moving and the green windshield staying behind, floating in mid-air. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Robo's Disco (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | August 21, 2022 | 2568 characters      Robo's Disco is a map where a funny little dark ride car runs on rails toward a door which opens when players enter a trigger area in front of it and then Jurassic Park music plays as you see a colorful disco floor and a big screen which says "Roboottos Disco" in a cursive font. The music ends abruptly and the door closes before the little car retreats back to its starting position, phasing through the closed door along the way.      The map is decorated with an almost cathedral-like appearance, though features cartoonish red, blue, and green lights that- while li

Apache Battle 3 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Apache Battle 3 is the third and final part (remake?) or the Apache Battle series. This version boasts a canyon, multi-story spawn area, and a turret that is actually useful. SCMapDB page Author: Mad Jonesy Date of final release: 1999 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Apache Battle 3 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | April 24, 2022 | 3067 characters      Apache Battle 3 is the third in an unnecessarily long line of maps which repeatedly ask the question: is fighting a seemingly neverending onslaught of apaches with clunky mounted turrets while woefully underequipped fun? I say unnecessarily long line because it seems each map comes to the same answer: eh, not particularly.      Like the previous maps, Apache Battle starts with the players in a base where they can grant themselves some limited equipment and stock up on HEV before facing the apache hell which awaits outside. This map has the most interesting take on the spawn base, though, as instead of being a real

Ambush 2 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Ambush 2 is a fun little map based on a GI Joe toy set. There isn't really anything ambush related here, clear the map of enemies, there is no end level trigger. SCMapDB page Author: Lymphoid Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Ambush 2 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | March 26, 2022 | 2846 characters      Despite being an unfinished map with grating combat and unclear objectives, Ambush 2 is a marked improvement on Ambush 1. First of all: kudos to the massive upgrade in mapping skill. The brushwork evoked a very interesting architecture which I would instantly recognize as this map's if I were to see it again. There is also working lighting, which does wonders for a map's aesthetic (the first Ambush was fullbright).      The first thing to understand going into Ambush 2 is that there are no rules and the map ends when it ends. Progression is less about where the right place to go is, and more about where you CAN go. Break do

Actual - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Actual is an early Sven map where players take on the role of airplane crash survivors. They must penetrate a strange laboratory in order to escape the wreckage. SCMapDB page Author: The_6th_Monkey Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Actual (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 23, 2022 | 3930 characters      Actual is a 2 part mapset released almost 20 years ago as of writing this review. It's an action survival walkthrough map.      The first Actual map opens in an airplane, which impressively crashes in a sequence where parts of the plane are blown off, revealing the outside. After the crash, players must swim in the half-submerged plane to safety. By swimming you can find what looks like a breakroom area with a few aliens in it. From there, you can swim and crawl around in caves until the map ends. That's the map. It's short and finding your way out of the plane is kind of difficult because it doesn't look like you

Swiss Cheese Halloween - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Swiss Cheese Halloween is a conversion of an ancient Half-Life mod of the same name. It was made back in the whimsical time of 2002 by an author who goes by Swiss Cheese, hence the map name. SCMapDB page Original mod author: Swiss Cheese Conversion author: Garompa Date of original mod release: 2002 Date of final Sven map release: 2020 Maps in package: 12 Map review of Swiss Cheese Halloween (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 27, 2021 | 6988 characters      A classic Halloween mod that's great for nostalgia and festivity, but frequently trips over itself.      Some information: Swiss Cheese Halloween is an old Halloween-themed Half-Life singleplayer mod. It was one of the first Half-Life mods I ever played, years ago. I was excited to play through it with a buddy in Sven, so I got this port. This review is following our finishing of the mod together.      The mod as a whole offers many maps; some are quite large in scale, some quite intricate, and som
