Metsa0 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
This map appears to be the opening sequence of a larger map set. Players spawn in the back of a truck, trapped with no hope of escape. If a player noclips out and uses a certain section of the truck's front bumper the truck will move to the other end of the tunnel it is in. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2004 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Metsa0 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 20, 2022 | 2308 characters      Metsa is, I speculate, an unfinished idea for a map. Perhaps it was an inspired narrative idea, to have several players driven, confined by a cage, in a truck through a jungle toward the next map as his version of the Half-Life tram ride intro. But, that's all entirely speculation.      I figured I would begin my review with speculation because there's little else to go on. The map is clearly broken. Players spawn in the back of a truck, as described above. However, there's nothing pushing the truck forward.

Megaoxean - Dunkelschwamm

Image
There is something about this map that is not seen in screenshots or mentioned in the map description on Sven Co-op map database. That is the fact that there is some sort of white filter over the map, except underwater. Everything is white unless you are underwater. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Megaoxean (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 6, 2022 | 3425 characters      If you were to tie a blindfold on me, splash milk in my face, and then hit me as hard as you can in my temple with a baseball bat, I would likely go about the next several moments feeling very similarly to how this map is likely to make you feel.      I'd love to comment on brushwork, textures, all that, except there's a problem with this map: the entire thing is submerged in thick, white fog which obscures everything more than an inch from your face unless you're underwater. The map utilizes falling in and out of wate

SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Megaoxean (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 6, 2022 | 1661 characters      This map has some weird filter on it where all you see is white unless you are underwater. There is a tube in spawn that you can see somehow. Jump down the tube, fall into the megaoxean, fight robogrunts with pistol and crowbar and maybe the rocket launcher in the whited out spawn room. If you aren't underwater, what you see is white.      I played with a friend, he was white, I got to the room under the oxean, it was white. I noclipped through the level and jumped around a couple areas, they were all white. There were also a t

Ice Grind - GrandmasterJ

Image
Ice Grind is a map where I assume players are supposed to grind the rail shown in the above picture. There is also a button that causes explosions. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Ice Grind (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 8, 2022 | 808 characters      Sometimes it can be hard to give a map a bad review when the description warns you of what is to come. The map is one room with a slippery rail, some tripmines, and a button that spams explosions. The most interesting and fun part of the map was finding out the rail had a smaller rail inside of it. I'm guessing it's an intangible brush over the real rail to make it harder to stay on. It's real boring and I spent barely any time on it before getting bored. Pros: This is one of the most accurate map descriptions on scmapdb Cons: boring not a good concept, its not even surfing Score: 0 / 10

Hyppyriz - GrandmasterJ

Image
One can be forgiven for looking at the above picture and thinking this might be a fun map to play. The map description is very clear, nothing in this map works. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Hyppyriz (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 7, 2022 | 897 characters      This map is the classic gag of jumping off a very tall diving board into a vey shallow pool of water.      The diving boards are astronomically high up and the ladders on them don't work. To even get on top of them requires lowering gravity.      The bottom floor is covered in water, if you crouch you are swimming. Landing in the water at 99999 gravity does not hurt you, so unless you hit a raised edge surviving the fall is easy.      Fun little idea, awful execution on every front. Pros: Fun idea Cons: The ladders don't work the water on the ground removes any semblance of a challenge, mainly trying to aim for the pools overall b

Great Big White World - Dunkelschwamm

Image
The map title is very accurate, the map is big and white. There are two other rooms and a hallway that are less white. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Great Big White World (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 7, 2022 | 1689 characters      If you aren't familiar with Robootto maps you'll find yourself horribly confused. There is a white room, a green room within which moves in and out of the ground, a pink room above which contains a meager helping of weapons which is inaccessible except by a single spawn point, and it is impossible to return from without falling to your death. Riding the green room (which is occupied by a single Barney) into the ground gives access to some weapons. A hallway from there drops into a pit. It would appear, from what I understand, that the map ends here.      The spawn points are all over the place. One even placed me square inside of a wall. Not that it matter

At the bottom there is a doorway where we are met with a "Thanks Robootto" sign over a deep pit leading to a dead end. If the cube rises back up you can access a large variety of weapons underneath it.      There is one spawn point in the ceiling of the big white room with explosives and a breakable part of the floor. To get out you have to either blow yourself up or jump to your death. You can drop explosives down below into t

Games of Mega Zone 6 - GrandmasterJ

Image
Despite the name, there are no games here. There are a few areas in which games can be, but they are mostly empty. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Games of Mega Zone 6 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 1, 2022 | 555 characters      There are a lot of rooms that lead to nothing and then there was a teleporter that sent me to a room where friendly grunts killed human assassins I didn't see. I killed the friendly grunts and then floated around the map in low gravity. There are some inaccessible areas.      Not much in this map. Pros: Cons: boring nothing to do Score: 0 / 10

Fun Land - GrandmasterJ

Image
Fun Land is a rocket launchpad and tower. Anybody can easily mistake this map for being some sort of land that is fun. This it not the case. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Fun Land (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | December 31, 2021 | 927 characters      I expected Funland to be somewhat fun. It was not fun. Players spawn in a dark and disorienting hallway with terrible ladders. The top floor is a bad looking observation deck for the rocket outside, the bottom floor has rocket access. The rocket looks terrible and it raises into the air slowy on touch, it rises up, and comes down, and it does this forever, very slowly.      There is a ledge accessible only by turning down the gravity. There is a tunnel system that I thought was maybe there so access the tunnel by some secret way, but it came to a dead end. Is there a way to access this?      The map is not fun. It looks terrible. Pros: Cons: Looks bad the

Fun Fun Fun - GrandmasterJ

Image
This is a map that has nothing to do with the title. The map description is candid about the fact that the rooms are textureless, the hallways are pitch black, and there are a ton of monsters. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Fun Fun Fun (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by GrandmasterJ | December 12, 2021 | 816 characters      This map is a large well lit room filled with what looks like a handful of each alien enemy with a large very dark hallway wrapped around it that ends in a ramp to a platform that overlooks the room. From this platform I can see a hole in the ceiling that is so far up I will never be able to get in there without cheats. From screenshots I can see weapons in there. Down here I don't have weapons, I have a pistol and 17 bullets.      I feel like this map is a slap in the face. Pros: Cons: absolute terrible design in every category players are taunted with actual fun just out of reach Score: 0 / 10

dda - GrandmasterJ

Image
The map description for this reads: " This is the fun map. but its too darky from the room." The first half of that description is a lie but the second half is true. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of dda (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by GrandmasterJ | December 11, 2021 | 860 characters      The map description reads "Its a fun map". This is a lie, this is not a fun map.      The map is a big unlit donut shaped hallway with a room in the center. The dark hallway is full of respawning bullsquids, the room is full of vortigaunts. You spawn only with a pistol and the default 17 rounds and there is no ammo that I could find. You spawn in the hallway with the respawning bullsquids.      There are parts of this map I did not get to, I can see the secrets tag and the screenshots, but I am not really interested in playing any further.      It is not a fun map. Pros: Cons: Players spawn in bullsquids no ammo, pi

F-zero X - Dunkelschwamm

Image
This map is an attempt to recreate, or at least pay homage to, the super fast racing series F-Zero. It has a track and forces players to be these floating car things. Be warned: there are flashing lights and high pitched music in this map. Player speed is so high that the briefest tap on W sends you flying headfirst into the opposite wall. I don't know how but my teammate managed to press the start button. As for me I just could not position myself in front of it. I keep flying into a wall and sliding into the corner. I tired using the button from the side but it just didn't work.      My teammate meanwhile was alone on a very simple floating track. H
