Chillplace v2 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
The only interactive feature of this map seems to be a big boombox that plays many sounds. The rest of the map is a tiny room that looks very interesting, the map is a lobby so there isn't all that much to do. If there's a Chillplace V1, I don't know about it!      This map is a chill lobby area with an island of blue grass and a big mystical tree with light shining from within. There's a lot of fun effects on display, like liberal use of sprites to create fun glowing particles and flowers, or additive gradient brushes to create the light burst from within the tree. There's a custom model of a horrible, unchill mothman with a gaping lower jaw laying beneath the tree, likely dreaming of mercifully departing its hideous existence. A stereo plays lots of funky tunes!

The map is entertaining enough for about five minutes but then it gets old.      The map itself is a really fantastic looking grassy green hill with a big well detailed tree in the middle. The hill slopes down rather sharply and ends in a black abyss, rock cliff walls surround us on the other side of the abyss. We can't drop down because there is an invisible wall keeping us on top of the hill. There are a lot of invisible walls, they become problematic around the tree's roots and it can be hard

Black Mesa Sideline - Dunkelschwamm

Here is a short mod converted to work in Sven Co-op. The banner itself even says the length is about 20 minutes, which I find is accurate. Story and gameplay-wise it is a very standard Black Mesa adventure. I haven't played the original mod so I have no idea what is different.      While the map is Black Mesa in theme, it looks pretty gorgeous throughout. Techjunk lines the industrial halls, ruined fan blades spin forlorn, subtle volume light brushes illuminate pathways, and it all looks really good. It's helped that there's also an abundance of setting in this small map, from deep complex corridor

It's not a lazy mod, there are no level transitions to the previous maps! The mod is a fairly standard Black Mesa themed map where we are collectively Gordon Freeman and we are skipping our destiny of saving the world and simply escaping.      This map may be standard Black Mesa, but it looks great. There are a ton of details, like bulging walls, crumpled doors, and natural looking rock walls. The level layout is fairly straightforward,

Halloween Construction - Dunkelschwamm

This map has Halloween in the name, but unlike other Halloween map it isn't obvious. The map sure is dark and spooky but the author has made other maps that are more Halloweeny. SCMapDB page Author: GreenTea MiaoMiaoLe Date of final release: 2013 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Halloween Construction (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 28, 2021 | 2545 characters      Halloween Construction is a map which accomplishes a fantastic sense of mystery right away, and I think it rides that feeling until it's all used up and knows exactly when to cut and run.      The map follows a loop of using co-op tandem button pushing to open new areas, exploring the new areas to find fantastic additions to the arsenal, and then being swarmed by unsettling foes. There are some segments early on in particular where the players face multiple gonomes in a pitch-black underground tunnel, each charging down the tunnel at a retreating player as their flashlight bounces fro

The map is straightforward, its got good enemy balance, nice weapon selection, and can be finished quite fast.      There is only one thing I didn't like about the map and that was that enemies appear in the player spawn after a certain point in the game. They are not difficult to kill but I just don't understand why it was necessary to put them there. It just means that when I spawn I have to fight the same enemies over and over again. It's not a good design choice to spawn in next to enemies.      On thing of particular note is t

Halloween Cemetery - Dunkelschwamm

Halloween Cemetery is just one in a multitude of Halloween and horror themed maps by the author. This particular map is one of the more straightforward ones with a strong start but is hampered by some poor design choices near the end. It has a very goofy, lighthearted tone supported by a brightly colored, smiley-faced Gonome named "Good Guy :>" who can aide the player in combat. The lighthearted feel is also helped with some cartoony ghost buttons, some tongue-in-cheek humor throughout, and some bright neon-lit thresholds separating the sections of the map.      The enemies, conversely, are your standard, overused Afrai

The zombies use the Afraid of Monsters skins so they are very fast. They also have too much health. At first this was somewhat bearable, my teammate and I were progressing through the map simply by running by them. But then we unlocked what seems to be the last boss and suddenly we weren't spawning in our usual spawn point. We were spawning all over the map. The map was filled with high health ultra f

Halloween Blackwoods - Dunkelschwamm

Halloween blackwoods is one of a few maps made by a Chinese mapper known as GreenTea MiaoMiaoLe. Due to language and regional barriers that's really all I know of the mapper. This individual has made no less than four Halloween maps along with two non-Halloween but still horror-themed maps. This particular one is unfinished and it shows. I get the appeal of making an enemy an invisible, borderline-unkillable monster that you just have to maneuver around is. Ever since the original Alone in the Dark I think people had an understanding that frustrating situations where power is stripped from you are scary, and thus make for interesting horror games. An invisible enemy takes a

My experience can be summarized in one sentence: I don't like invisible enemies.      There are 2(?) invisible zombies with tons of health and they plague the players pretty much the entire game. Then you open a door and the map is over. I had no fun.      I guess the aesthetic was pretty cool. There was a large windmill with turning blades that l
