Karpaselamaa - Dunkelschwamm

The map author, Robootto, has a tendency to make nonsense maps. This map has a nonsense name (or at least I could not figure out the meaning) and is a simple objectiveless rats style map.

Map review of Karpaselamaa

I often wonder if Robootto was an elaborate troll or just a truly baffling mapper whose design somehow accidentally hated the player.

Karpaselamaa is a "rats style" map which in this instance means it includes LARGE objects. By this metric, some other Robootto maps may be considered rats maps too.

In this case the large objects are a television, a glass of water, a remote control, and a houseplant. You'll notice that I didn't say an environment- usually a rats map is like "bedroom" or "kitchen" or "garage" or something. Nah, this is Robootto. You get four objects placed with little regard to one another. Inside of the potted plant is a bizarrely proportioned and sloped building full of weapons. It's truly awful to navigate.

As is the entirety of this map: to get down from the spawn position at the TOP of the houseplant, the player must ride a weird U-shaped elevator that the player must jump from the narrow top of the houseplant onto, as sliding down is almost certain to kill the player. There's a pink brush leading from the top of the plant to the aforementioned glass of water, which has an exit in the bottom if players manage to jump into the top. That's not likely, however, as this brush which leads there has no collisions and the player moves right through it. This will likely cause the early players to accidentally jump to their deaths.

The remote has a fun little battery compartment which can be broken into to grab a gauss gun. All of its buttons are featureless but look interactable. This is misleading, as the remote seems to only exist to provide the gauss gun.

The giant TV has 3 color buttons which act as doors. That is to say, they are doors which look like buttons, which have solid-colored transparent doors in front of them. Sometimes a giant brush for the front of the TV moves up or down, and if it's moved down it will block these doors. Once inside, you can climb a ladder into a TV room with what looks like "C64" brushed out. At this point, you might look to gauss jump around. There's not much point. There's nothing else in this map.

I don't recommend it. It's ugly and annoying to get around. There's really not much in the way of redeeming features. This isn't a map which offers anything for its players. I can't even recommend it for PVP- players all spawn at the exact same point, are utterly neutered unless they walk up a difficult slope after making their way down a difficult high position- the first person to find weapons will dominate this map.

Pros:

  • There are giant things, almost like a rats map
  • The remote is cute
  • Jumping around the letters with the gauss gun, while pointless, was a bit of fun

Cons:

  • It's mostly quite ugly and clunky- shoddy workmanship
  • The spawn, the elevator to get down, the fake brush- it's all just so terrible
  • The map is pointless
  • Getting weapons is annoying as shit
  • Getting around is annoying as shit
  • Very little content for entertainment

Score: 0.1 / 10
