Umbrella - Dunkelschwamm
This is absolutely the Umbrella from the Resident Evil franchise, if there was any doubt. Umbrella seems to have abandoned their fancy mansion labs and decided a series of boxy rooms connected by hallways is the way to go.

Hey, you wanna grab some SAWs and kite some melee monsters with resident evil skins backing through big corridors with semi-functional double doors? Hop in loser, we're going to ze_umbrella.
It's hard to do a lot with the concept of machinegunning down a bunch of mostly melee enemies in what are mostly straight corridors. Every now and then there's a big tarantula enemy which replaces a bullsquid, which does add some ranged enemy combat to the mix. But, for the most part we're running backwards to not get grabbed by zombie re-models chasing us. Any time we found a fallback to something we can jump on top of, it became a grinder to fire our SAWs endlessly onto hapless enemies who could not fathom the concept of climbing.
The brushwork is fine. It tries to stay a bit conservative in most areas, only giving Umbrella's brand of clinical sci-fi complex for a bunch of nondescript chambers most of the time. Toward the end it starts going off the rails, with a strange exploding door with a face on it, and the level seems to culminate with our heroes walking through door straight into hyperspace. There are only a couple areas where I think the lighting looks actually bad, but the rest is just simple and doesn't evoke much.
There's not really an escalation of threat that I can feel, just every room is opened and gushes monsters. More than once monsters managed to crawl into a spawn area, including when we got a much-appreciated checkpoint halfway through. That said, it was as easy to herd enemies out of the spawn area as it was to herd them in, so there wasn't must nuisance there. I think the biggest problem is that just about every time you open a door, you're bound to have a similar experience to the last time you did: you fight one of five zombie reskins, or the rare bullsquid? Usually, it's just a glob of all of the above. In any case, the answer is kinda just to run backwards and fire your machineguns at their faces.
The monsters' models themselves are a bit interesting, but their models are poached wholesale from other Resident Evil goldsrc/Sven projects. The lickers end up being the greatest threat because they're small, hard to hit, and relentlessly fast in their pursuit.
If you like firing machineguns at pursuing zombies, this is nothing but that.
Pros:
- If I turn my brain all the way off, like backup generators and all, this is a fun straight-forward action map
- I like Resident Evil Umbrella themed stuff. All of it. Based on the games, based on the bad movies, based on the good movies, whatever. I just find it all fun. That's a pro
- The map at least gives the players a checkpoint and a SAW. Without that SAW this would be miserable
- I kinda liked that there are frequent double-player checks
Cons:
- The overall progression and layout of the map is bland and uninteresting and not very memorable
- The models, one of the most interesting parts, are all poached from other maps or mods
- No variety or escalation to the map
- Easy to cause spawn-camping by the monsters
- Kinda gives up on the theme and aesthetic at the end and just starts doing whatever
Score: 5.1 / 10
