Carpodacus Carnage - GrandmasterJ
Welcome to Cardopoc- Carpacad- Carpocu -to this map, which is mostly Black Mesa themed. There's some story about this map being made specifically for one person then somehow finding its way into the internet's consciousness and then getting unceremoniously dumped on Sven because Sven needs some more chaff I guess.

Before I get into the review I think it's necessary to look at the map description and see that this is a singleplayer map somebody found and then ported to Sven Co-op. Apparently this was made in a weekend for the author's dad, awwww.
The map definitely seems like it was largely just dumped into Sven and left to fend for itself. Survival mode is on by default and although the map is fairly easy, being singleplayer and all, I died three times in a row to a difficult jump. I don't understand how survival mode is meant to translate into a singleplayer experience where players have the benefit of quicksave. I turned off survival mode and it was playable, the respawn timer is pretty long though.
There is no accommodation made for respawning, if a player dies then they have to traverse the entire linear level to get back to the front. That, plus the respawn timer means dying is not a fun experience. Players start off at 25 health which isn't that big of a deal, either enemy damage is tweaked or there is something else going on because 25 health was fairly adequate the whole way through. There was HEV, which did help a lot.
The whole map is very Black Mesa, which is fine, but having played a lot of Sven Co-op I do get bored of the basic textures. Nothing in this map sticks out to me, nothing is truly memorable. At multiple times my teammate even said 'oh this is surface tension' or 'oh this is power up'. If you like Black Mesa, this is more Black Mesa.
In fact, the only things that really stick out to me were the times I got lost. The second map had this awful knot of hallways we had to navigate to find a teleporter. The teleporter put us in another convolution of hallways where we find two teleporters. One teleporter puts us back a ways and the second elevator put us where we need to go. Which happens to be another convolution of hallways with two teleporters and one puts us back a ways and the other puts us where we need to go. Now imagine going through that multiple times on a respawn.
The next map had low gravity and we accidentally sequence broke multiple times. On the very last map I think we avoided a whole boss battle and ended things early. We were constantly questioning whether or not we broke something and I think the answer is that we definitely did.
At one point we walked into a vent. The map has climbing on by default so perhaps we were not supposed to actually access this vent. But we did and we got hit with a push brush that pressed us up against a vent that we could not break. We both had to kill ourselves, which would have made us restart the map since survival mode is on by default, then find the other end of the vent to press a button or destroy some bullshit or whatever to break the vent cover and end the push brush. After all that we are… back where we started.
One thing I liked was how supplies were scattered around the map. It was enough to keep two players armed and still concerned for their survival. There are a ton of wooden crates around and they are all breakable and most have goodies hidden inside. The author definitely took advantage of breakables.
At best, it's Black Mesa done in a mediocre manner. At worst it's annoying, confusing, and pointless. I hate to hate on a map made in a weekend for somebody's dad, so instead I should hate on the conversion author. Why port this map? Why port this map with the bare minimum being done to transition to multiplayer? I don't think the original map was very good and I don't think this port is very good.
Pros:
- The map looks like Black Mesa, if you want a Black Mesa adventure then you should play this map
- The health and damage is balanced in a way that feels precarious but surmountable
- Lots of stuff to break and there were goodies in almost all of it.
Cons:
- No accomodations for multiplayer at all, the Sven engine seemed to break the map in multiple ways
- Overall confusing and sometimes boring
- Survival mode is completely unnecessary, the platforming sections alone require respawns
- We sequence broke many times accidentally
- There's just nothing inspiring about this map, nothing feels new or interesting
- We got into a vent that trapped us so we had to kill ourselves to get out, plus survival mode is on
Score: 4.5 / 10
