Carpodacus Carnage - Dunkelschwamm
Welcome to Cardopoc- Carpacad- Carpocu -to this map, which is mostly Black Mesa themed. There's some story about this map being made specifically for one person then somehow finding its way into the internet's consciousness and then getting unceremoniously dumped on Sven because Sven needs some more chaff I guess.

Carpodacus Carnage is a really cute mapset that plays into a lot of strong Half-Life stuff: exploring vents, shooting through corridors and along cliff faces, navigating portal puzzles, then going to Xen to fight a gargantua. There's some beautiful brushwork, some fun fire fights, and a lot of variety.
First, and most pressingly, let me say that this map is not made for co-op. I found the combat throughout this map to be really easy except for when I started getting really reckless. Enemies have stupid low health, you only have to fight a few of them at a time, and the players are often quite equipped. I turned off survival mode for our personal preferences, but this would have been pretty easy to play without it. The main deaths we suffered were at the hands of environmental/fall damage. The map does cap our health at 25, but there's often enough HEV to prevent that from being a problem. Things at least get a bit hairier by the third map, when alien grunts became more common.
As I mentioned, the map is kind of like a remix of the greatest hits of Half-Life. The first map includes parts that remind me of Unforeseen Consequences, Office Complex, and We've Got Hostiles. The second map reminds me of parts of Surface Tension, Lambda Core, and Residue Processing. The third map goes more into Xen combat, which you'd imagine to be more like the later parts of Half-Life, but feels a bit more grounded in the cavernous exploration like in Blue Shift or Opposing Forces. If anything, from there the gameplay reminds me of Forget About Freeman. Finally, the fourth map is a battle with a gargantua that I imagine would have been a lot like Power Up if not for two things: the explosive weapons we'd been given made exploding the Garg without solving any puzzles stupid easy, and then we were able to sequence break to the end pretty much immediately thanks to the low gravity.
I think the mapset's strongest qualities are its pacing. Lots of it is spent scrambling around halls, blasting through quick fights, and getting lost just long enough to find your way forward. I think this is upset some by this conversion's total lack of co-op support. The second map in particular became a huge pain in the ass as we'd take occasional spills and have to retrace our steps through multiple treacherous platforming segments to get back to where we were going. To be fair, I did modify things to disable survival mode. Also to be fair, having to restart the map due to survival mode wouldn't have alleviated this problem.
Anyway, overall I would recommend this. I think most of its problems are easy to quickly overlook, and most of the map was spent either looking at nice brushwork or blasting our way through underpowered enemies.
Pros:
- Lots of high-paced action
- Feels like a best hits remix tape of Half-Life
- Lots of variety
- I thought the lowered health was a good way to keep some of the tension up
- Lots of fun equipment to play with
Cons:
- No real attempts to make this co-op compatible make it easy, exploitable, and annoying when trying to not play on survival
- Maps are pretty easy to crawl into unplanned areas and sometimes sequence break severely
- The fights are, for the most part, way too easy
- A lot of navigation in the second map, especially the teleporter maze at the end, was frustrating
- The garg battle at the end was quickly ended with a couple rockets and M203 grenades.
- Early on there was a bit where we both crawled into a vent that push-volumed us into a corner we couldn't get out. Without having manually disabled survival mode, this would have instantly put the map below a 5/10 for me.
Score: 7.3 / 10
