Quake for Sven Co-op - Dunkelschwamm

You may already know that Sven Co-op is a Half-Life mod which was made on a modified Quake engine. So Quake is already in Half-Life's digital DNA. This is a port of Quake into Sven Co-op and it fits like a glove.

Map review of Quake for Sven Co-op

Quake for Sven Co-op is what it says on the tin: the first episode of Quake, and a handful of deathmatch maps, for Sven Co-op. There are new scripted enemies, scripted weapons, scripted pick-ups, and all authentic maps and textures and sounds. The enemies have fancy new skeleton-based animations, but otherwise near identical to how they behave in Quake.

What can I even say? It's Quake. It's balls-to-the-wall action with incredible dark fantasy atmosphere and punchy weapons. It has a chunkiness that Half-Life tried very hard to undo to create a more immersive survival atmosphere, but bringing it back allows the game to flow so naturally as an action shooter. It really works great for Co-op, and for the bit of deathmatch we played. Everything feels great. The only thing that still feels like Half-Life is the player movement, which doesn't disagree terribly with Quake gameplay.

I don't have much to add. I think this is a near flawless port of the first episode, and I really do wish there was the rest of Quake available to play. I'm not the biggest Quake-head so I couldn't tell you every small thing this changed, but I find what is available surpasses my expectations for loyal adaption- and thankfully, Quake plays well as a co-op shooter.

The only real differences I know of are: the lack of the funny scrolling clouds effect Quake's skies had (probably not even possible, so whatever); and the difficulty selection has been replaced with an Exit/Co-op/Deathmatch selector. These changes make sense to me.

The least effective ported item is the scripted environment suit. The player still flinches from environmental damage, they just don't take any. That's likely a small price to pay to get the script to work at all, so I don't see this as a major strike against the map. If anything, I list this minor flaw to show how little I have to pick and scrape for to criticize.

I recommend playing with friends. Playing with people too attuned to Quake may turn into a speedrunning race. Otherwise, this is as fun as playing Quake with friends.

Pros:

  • Everything ported straight from Quake looks great
  • Everything that had to be hand-remade to work still works anywhere from serviceably to great
  • The entire first episode makes for a great co-op experience
  • The deathmatch is still very functional after all these years
  • All of the scripting work for the enemies, pick-ups, and weapons needs to be commended

Cons:

  • There are a few very minor places where the need to script the gameplay elements over Sven Co-op shows clunky seams- especially in Lightning and the Environment Suit
  • It definitely leaves me wanting more- wish more of the later maps were ported
  • Quake's flaws are present- like the lame Cthon boss fight
  • Sometimes having a bunch of fiends and shamblers spawned onto me works far less in Sven's player controls than Quake's speedy movement

Score: 9.1 / 10
