Map review of Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is a platforming map where players race through 6 stages, a bonus stage, and a boss battle with tricky traps and secret emeralds.

Graphics are largely taken from old Sonic games to create the blockiest South Island I have ever seen. Despite the primitive geometry, there's a real charm to each environment that basks in the simplicity of a much older 3D title. The simple graphics sometimes help, sometimes hinder (as is the case with the bonus level).

The puzzles range from simple and fun to hair-tuggingly frustrating. Some are really fun, like walking over air jets that would punish jumping over them, or even navigating ice-slick platforms was fun. Some of the really annoying ones include trying to get around crushers that appear randomly from the ground, timing around erratic pendulums, and navigating invisible pits.

All the while, players should look out for the chaos emeralds, which sometimes are cleverly hidden and other times hidden by some devious extra platforming puzzle. Each of these puzzles and traps are allowed to be very simple because a single mess-up can send a player back to the start of the stage to repeat all of the platforming up to that point.

The bonus stage in particular is a real pain in the ass, being a vertical level with microscopic platforms with a mostly flat green texture on top, which perfectly blends in with everything below it if you're trying to gauge your jumps by looking straight down. If that was intentional, it is as genius as it is devious. I hate it, but I respect it.

My friend and I ended up turning on noclip to get around two parts: the crushers in the sixth stage, and the emerald in the bonus level. Unlocking all of the emeralds net us Super Sonic mode, which gives you 5000 hp.

With 5000 hp, we faced the boss. This would have been much harder with normal HP, because this boss routinely throws us into lava. There's a lava arena where platforms occasionally raise or lower into lava, and you must rely on these platforms until springs raise up which you can use to jump toward Eggman's Eggmobile. Once atop it, you can wail on him with a crowbar to whittle his health down until a push brush appears and launches the player off, likely into lava. Once his health depletes, he explodes and we win.

Overall, if you like platforming maps, I can recommend this. I think most people who are crazy bhoppers might be too broken to appreciate a simpler platforming map like this, but I certainly found fun in it when I wasn't getting very frustrated.

Pros:

  • Cute Sonic graphics
  • Some really good platforming puzzles sometimes
  • A good variety of ideas
  • Really like the emerald side mission that gives us a very appropriately broken Super Sonic mode

Cons:

  • Some really annoying/frustrating platforming puzzles that felt more like luck than skill to me to accomplish
  • Really could have benefited from more music
  • The springs are no fun to use. They don't act like springs, they act like air jets

Score: 6.8 / 10
