Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - GrandmasterJ

Gotta go fast, again! Another set of six areas players have to clear before dealing with the evil Dr. Eggman. This was merged with the first map by the community but is being reviewed separately.

Map review of Sonic the Hedgehog 2

This map is very similar to the first one, with a central hub and some Sonic themed courses accessed by jumping through pictures on the wall. Right off the bat a big difference I see is a lot more details added. The second level is a burning version of the first, its really cool.

This map is extremely similar to the first map, with lots of platforming and special gimmicks per level. The is music for each stage and that's a very welcome addition. I remember thinking the lack of music beyond one short song was strange in the first map. So while it may be similar, it looks a lot better and feels better with the music.

The first map had a boss fight, but this one did not. After completing all the puzzles the map just asked if we wanted it to be over, which we did not. We wanted to find the rest of the chaos emeralds and it was really nice the map allowed for us to vote no and continue searching. Getting all the chaos emeralds unlocks hyper health mode.

I should also mention how there is no instant death piston at the last level we had to cheat around. The first map had a lot of things that flew around and splattered us but this map had a lot less. It felt unfair and the absence makes the second map feel a lot easier.

The map is great and really improves on a lot of things in the first map. I especially appreciate the music and details added. The lack of sudden death traps and hidden deadly pistons is pretty cool too.

Pros:

  • The map feels like a fun Sonic adventure
  • the music adds to the atmosphere
  • I like how we can unlock things and delay the end of the map to unlock more things
  • the worst parts of the first map are not here

Cons:

  • it's so similar to the first map one might question its existence
  • no final boss fight, map politely asks to end

Score: 8 / 10
