Nuclear Power Plant - GrandmasterJ
Welcome to the Nuclear Power Plant, a short mod for the original Half-Life from the ancient year of 1999 ported to Sven Co-op in the modern age. As the name implies, it is a nuclear power plant, and since this is a shooting game, we get to fight in the power plant.

The starting area of the map is a room with a barney and two HEV suits in weird spiky cages. There are two buttons, one opens the cage for the HEV suit on the right and the other button seems nonfunctional, I could not open the cage on the left. Anyway, we opened the cage on the right, lured in the barney, closed the cage, and I think that alone is going to boost the score for this map.
This map is a pretty standard walkthrough map with a heavy does of hallways. I'm going to count the big vertical chamber we have to climb up and then back down as a hallway on its side. It was kind of hard to dodge gunfire in tight hallways so we all died a lot, but there really aren't that many enemies. Players start with crowbars and we have to jump down the aforementioned vertical shaft so we can start beating down enemies. Weapons and ammo are handed out sparingly and I think the map was made with crowbarring most of these enemies in mind.
Pretty early on I hit an objective and teleported my team to me while also unlocking new spawn areas where I was. The teleport thing doesn't happen again but we do periodically unlock new spawns and that is great. At one point we teleported to another room while walking down a hallway and it blew my teammate up, I did not telefrag them, it just happened randomly. Also enemies attacked immediately after so it was a bit disconcerting and other teammates couldn't really help through the hidden teleport.
The map was made in 1999 but it looks great. It's got the generic science building Half-Life thing going on so maybe its not that interesting all the time. But it does have some fun big swinging things. The vertical shaft has a bunch of fun shapes floating in it and fills with electricity. It's nothing too ground breaking and it does give the standard Half-Life vibe but it never falls completely into the boring category.
Overall the map is very serviceable. It's got a fast forward flow that is kept up with updating spawns, a slow build up of our arsenal, and mostly clear objectives. The Half-Life themed corridors weren't the most interesting but there were still some fun set pieces. I also think the crowbar focused combat was pretty interesting. Also I am just now realizing that I saw my teammate with an M16 and I never got one.
Pros:
- Updating spawn points are great
- Scarce ammo and weapons make for tense combat that works well
- Certain points of the map look really good
- Killing that Barney at the start of the map was the highlight of my day
Cons:
- The tight corridors are a bit upsetting
- The map is a bit bland
- I can imagine with more people that nobody will ever have ammo and some won't have guns
Score: 6.5 / 10
