Nuclear Power Plant - Dunkelschwamm

Welcome to the Nuclear Power Plant, a short mod for the original Half-Life from the ancient year of 1999 ported to Sven Co-op in the modern age. As the name implies, it is a nuclear power plant, and since this is a shooting game, we get to fight in the power plant.

Map review of Nuclear Power Plant

Nuclear Power Plant is a simple walkthrough map with a bit of platforming, a bit of vent scouring, and a bit of firefighting.

There's lots of fun bits, like shutting off an electric coil before climbing up it like a ladder, or a caged HEV suit that we used to gib a local Barney and grab a gun before it should have been possible. There's a bit where a spinning piece of machinery has two tripod sentries atop it, which I don't think I've ever seen done in a map before this point- it was really effective!

The port is really good for its use of checkpoints, ensuring players can stay close even when killed by something silly. There is one bit that I imagine is two maps stitched together for the port where walking down a hallway teleports the player into an identical hallway which allowed blackops to exploit and kill me near-instantly with grenades, but that was a minor issue.

The mapping is all very detailed and good looking, though in many areas it feels oddly cramped and in other places it feels oddly spacious. Scale always felt odd and less-than-functional, but it's otherwise a good-looking map especially for its original date.

Overall, I think nuclear power plant makes for a fun quick walkthrough map to play with friends. The overall difficulty is well balanced, and it's well paced with a variety of gameplay.

Pros:

  • Well-paced variety walkthrough
  • The platforming isn't too annoying
  • The combat is overall well balanced, fun, and tense
  • Good-looking brushwork
  • Fun interactables
  • Neat spinning tripod stuff

Cons:

  • Navigating some ladders was a pain
  • Scale in each room was really odd- sometimes very cramped, sometimes very spacious, always felt weird
  • The security camera feeds are neat but unnecessary and as soon as I realized the buttons would do that I avoided them

Score: 6.4 / 10
