Host_Error - GrandmasterJ
Clearly inspired by the popular backrooms horror trope, players must navigate a shifting maze and run from a chase monster before doing something or other that may or may not beat the map.

I want to be up front, we cheated to play this map. Players are dumped into a backrooms flavored maze and a gargoyle hunts the players. We kept wandering around and the gargoyle would appear and gibs one of us and the lights would turn on and off until eventually we get some sort of gibberish message. Then the next time my partner dies randomly she is put in observer mode and that happens to me soon after.
The map is ok I guess, I'm not a fan of mazes and I was suspicious that this map changed layouts, which was confirmed when I noclipped around later and found maze chunks floating in space. The lighting is uniform which makes the map look almost fullbright and the textures are all the same. It's hard to navigate and wandering around lost the entire duration of the map is not my idea of fun.
The gargoyle is amazing. It teleports around players to give us a spook. When I saw it I would run backwards and try to turn as many corners as I could to lose it only to see it zoom to the next corner whenever it was out of sight. It has a beak so I would see just a beak peeking out at me. It was a lot of fun, definitely transcended the old goldsrc engine. In fact later when my teammate and I had godmode and all the guns we found out there is actually a gargoyle for each player, I killed one and she killed one. That made a pillar of static appear and when we entered the pillar the whole map went crazy and ended. It was a really really cool sequence.
It's fun and all, but I don't really know how to win or what to do. We can't kill the gargoyles without weapons and either death becomes permanent after a certain time has been reached or there is a hidden lives system. So once death is permanent that's it for winning. There's a whole suburb hidden in the map, there must be a way to get there. But hell if I know. I can't find anything online either.
I had to cheat to get through the map and I don't think I experienced all of it. The map is a shifting maze with the same textures everywhere, a nightmare to navigate. The gargoyle was really cool and by far the best part of the map. It gibbed me by straight up superman flying into me. It made weird sounds and hid behind corners like the cutest kitten in the world. I want to crack this map open and suck the gargoyle right out of it. It's just too bad I can't figure out how to beat it.
Pros:
- The chase monster is peak and I love it to pieces
- If you like mazes then this maze is pretty good
- there are some really fun glitchy cutscenes that look incredible
Cons:
- the map is very confusing
- I don't understand how we're supposed to survive instant death with limited lives
- the above two points combine to make the map feel unwinnable
- flat textures and lack of direction make the game feel boring
Score: 5.5 / 10
