Dreamstairs - GrandmasterJ
"You hit your head and now you are dreaming" of some blocky stairs covered in respawning enemies. This map really embodies early Sven Co-op, where things appear to be optimized for a rush of people.

You hit your head and now you're in a dream … . where you climb stairs covered in respawning enemies.
My first reaction to this map was pretty negative. We start off on stairs and we climb upward, with full armor which really does help our survival, until we fight globs of enemies. Each enemy has a ton of health so its slow going and each enemy respawns so when we clear out a patch and move forward we sometimes have to deal with enemies behind us, putting us in and endless loop of being pincered.
But my teammate suggested just running forwards so that became my strategy, and it worked really well. There is this ladder we can find that has buttons to unlock higher and higher parts of it as we ascend. Along the stairs are piles of new weapons and ammo, at one point giving us a longjump. All this really helps fly by the enemies until eventually we unlock the ladder to the top of the tower, and an rpg, so we can just climb up to the final stage of the map. The last boss has a lot of health and I didn't even have to kill it to win the map. This is definitely a map where fighting the enemies is a trap and the solution is to plow forward no matter what.
This is a fairly old map and I think it was indicative of its time, a time when it wasn't uncommon to get 20+ people mowing down enemies to the finish line. With just two players it was a tactical slog, with both my teammate and I seeing how far we could get beyond the respawning enemies, grab what weapons we need plus the very important long jump, and race to the top. I imagine with a full server this map may even be trivial.
With just two people, which I think is the default amount for any game with 'co-op' in the title, the map is doable. There are some parts of the stairs that are difficult to get through and even getting very far can lead to extremely low health and instant death when a player accesses a new bout of enemies. It's a decent map that simply hasn't aged well.
Pros:
- Although the map seems daunting in the beginning, once you get the hang of it things can be fun
- good progression of weapons, ammo, and eventually the long jump
- the unlocking ladder is the secret backbone of the whole map, I appreciate it
- players start with max armor, ensuring longevity
Cons:
- the enemies have a lot of health and actually fighting them is a trap
- the map hasn''t aged well and can be a bit frustrating for first time players
- the optional nature of the last boss with way too much health was weirdly a letdown for me
- it really does look like a map made in the year that this map was made
Score: 5.5 / 10
