Dreamstairs - Dunkelschwamm

"You hit your head and now you are dreaming" of some blocky stairs covered in respawning enemies. This map really embodies early Sven Co-op, where things appear to be optimized for a rush of people.

Map review of Dreamstairs

Dreamstairs is walkthrough map in which the players ascend a spiral staircase surrounded by death drop and filled with respawning enemies. All progress made is immediately met with enemies reappearing to wreak vengeance on your buttocks. The story implies that the scenario is a hallucinatory manifestation from head trauma, and I think it succeeds as a headache simulator.

The visuals are dirt simple, to an almost respectable degree. The only real flourish to the grey concrete staircase is layers of semitranslucent grey planes which create a moody misty fog below you that becomes thicker the further you ascend. The mood is a tad butchered, perhaps, by the bright yellow chutes in which red ladders complete a ketchup-and-mustard clownish break in the visual composition like a McDonalds placed square between two industrial warehouses. Perhaps the map was simply ahead of its time by signposting the ladder with yellow paint.

The ladder is indeed a welcome element for how it allows players to skip certain segments of the spiral staircase of respawning foes. It is a bit undercut, however, in that the players must ascend the staircase in its entirety to complete their arsenal.

Completing the arsenal sometimes feels a bit arbitrary. The enemies are certified bullet sponges, and unless I'm unloading a shotgun into them at point blank or using underbarrel grenades to launch them into the bottomless pit, every other gun felt like a peashooter. Even trip mines barely seemed functional. Oftentimes I found the best way to deal with a situation was to use the glut of HEV armor at spawn to run past enemies like I'm a quarterback running for the endzone.

I think the ending can be interpreted, but I interpret it as my finally having died.

Dreamstairs is one of those Sven maps that can be thrown into a rotation just for the chaos of it, but I hesitate to recommend it to anybody. After we finished playing, I said to my friend, "It isn't very long, but it still manages to annoy."

Pros:

  • Good beefy arsenal + longjump by the end
  • It's fun knocking enemies into the bottomless pit
  • It's good if you just really like crazy chaos

Cons:

  • Respawning enemies everywhere makes me quickly abandon tactics
  • Enemies easily follow players into the spawn area
  • Visuals are very bad
  • Enemies are very bullet spongey and unsatisfying to fight

Score: 3.2 / 10
