Map review of Dojo

Dojo is a really cute wave survival map. Players must use their swords (crowbars) to fight against ninjas (unarmed Male Assassins) for five waves to defend the dojo.

The map is very simple. There's no button to start the map, just a wave starting after an arbitrary amount of time. The map itself is a ring around a building with doors straight through it. Enemies are launched into the arena from above the outer walls. Their health is so low the crowbar gibs them. The only dynamic element is that after a few waves it adds Female Assassins (guns and grenades and everything) to the mix.

Then, at the end, it sends four VERY beefy melee samurai at the players. We were concerned as two players with crowbars that we might have a tedious time chipping away the samurai's health. But, after killing their entourage, we managed to cheese them by luring them into corners and jumping on their heads where they have trouble landing a melee attack. By crowd surfing, I was about to chip away at their skulls with my crowbar like I was mining for diamonds.

The map ends elegantly with credits after killing the enemies.

The visuals are very simple but effective, evoking a sunny dojo environment with calming trees. It's the type of map I wouldn't mind hanging out with people in for a few minutes to chat if we weren't being harried by ninjas. The action is supplemented by fun Kill Bill music, too.

Overall, I would recommend it for any action-oriented rotation. It's very short, very sweet, and pretty easy. A good-looking, if shallow, distraction.

Pros:

  • Fun to gib enemies with the crowbar
  • Doesn't overstay its welcome
  • Very nice visuals
  • Keeps it simple
  • Longjumps are very fun
  • Loved the Kill Bill soundtrack inclusion.

Cons:

  • If I hadn't cheesed the boss, that would have been really annoying
  • The glut of assassins during the boss battle was really annoying
  • As nice as the simplicity is, I can't help but wish there was something extra players could do other than swing a crowbar

Score: 7.8 / 10
