Horror 1 - Dunkelschwamm

The map page has a story written out for us, plus a promise to deliver more maps in the same story at a later time. But it's been over two decades and this is all we have, a very short map.

Map review of Horror 1

Horror 1 is a very short outdoor zombie-shootin' map with some very cute brushwork and textures. There's meant to be a foreboding horror theme, and frankly whole map is just adorable.

Here's the progression: You start by your car, walk through a tunnel with a few headcrabs in it, walk through wilderness where zombie ghosts (I presume- they have the additive draw mode) ambush. The players pass by what looks like a church (which I thought was a very fun visual, even if a bit blocky and janky in places), and a stack of boxes with a key hovering over it. This key will unlock a gate in the upcoming graveyard which ends the map. If you pass by the gate and keep moving up the road, you will open a shortcut using a plunger to some explosives to make a shortcut to spawn (my teammate using the plunger as I walked on top of the level exploding me is the only death either of us earned in the map).

tl;dr: You walk through a tunnel, grab a key, unlock a gate and the map ends.

The zombies and headcrabs are not a threat, as the players are pretty well stocked. In the graveyard the zombies respawn, but what are three halflife zombies with low health when you have shotguns and crossbows? When you have plenty of space to maneuver?

Also, I just have to point out, the key that we collect is made out of brushes with a strange black metal texture that makes it look like some weird bazooka or something. I figured out it was meant to be a key, but not because it succeeded in looking like a key.

Criticism aside, I get the impression this map exists because its author was learning how to make maps. Each section is an extremely short demonstration of some mapping skill being practiced: respawning enemies in the graveyard, a collectable key by the church, a plunger which explodes part of the level in a completely superfluous and out-of-the-way "shortcut".

Under the lens that this was a learning experience, I think the author definitely learned the technical elements. However, the gameplay is lacking in natural progression, or really any kind of challenge. The way it feels like a sequence of gameplay ideas uncreatively strung together prevents the horror theme from ever taking off the ground, because it's hard to build horror atmosphere in what feels like a learning environment. I understand this lesson is coming 25ish years too late, but I hope this is to the benefit of any readers.

I recommend this map if your server rotation needs filler. It's playable, but it's dirt easy and over in seconds.

Pros:

  • The map is fully functional
  • It's really cute. Like, really cute
  • I like the look of the church
  • Blasting zombies with the shotgun never gets old and this map heavily features that

Cons:

  • Dirt easy
  • Really clunky, unnatural progression
  • The shortcut is completely superfluous and doesn't actually shorten any travel length
  • That key does not look like a key
  • Fails at horror atmosphere

Score: 4.7 / 10
