Host_Error - Dunkelschwamm

Clearly inspired by the popular backrooms horror trope, players must navigate a shifting maze and run from a chase monster before doing something or other that may or may not beat the map.

Map review of Host_Error

This is a neat little scripting showcase based on the backrooms phenomenon. You and your friends can run around in a backrooms area being chased by a teleporting black gargoyle who sometimes kills you, sometimes is just cheeky. There are some hints about how if you don't run the space will be less hostile, but I didn't find any kind of behavior did much to change how often the black gargoyle would appear and attack.

After meandering around with my buddy until we were both picked off by the monster one-by-one, we tried again with cheats to see if we could figure out what the intended method of success is. We managed to kill the gargoyles and last long enough that a pillar of static appeared. Touching the script activated some kind of wacky script that made the interface and all of the brushes in the map go crazy bonkers. It's hard to describe, you just have to see it for yourself. Then the map ended.

The monster itself is neat, in how it behaves and animates particularly. But in terms of gameplay it feels like a random death, which isn't really something I find terribly entertaining or fun. The map itself looks full bright because of how intense all of the lighting is, which gives it less of a surreal vibe and gives it more of a Toontown Online feeling. That said, it is neat when the lights turn off for a second and the gargoyle suddenly becomes far more threatening.

Noclipping around I saw there's an incredibly well rendered suburban backyard scene included in the map, but I don't know how we were meant to reach it.

Overall, I think this map is really neat but don't recommend playing it unless you're just looking to scream for viewers on a livestream. The actual experience is boring punctuated by frustration, all tinged in directionlessness. Those are the ingredients for the question, "What's the point?"

Pros:

  • Really neat scripting to make the gargoyle move the way it does
  • Really neat scripting for the end-level trigger

Cons:

  • Kinda ugly
  • Kinda boring
  • Kinda confusing
  • Kinda frustrating

Score: 3.2 / 10
