Galleon - GrandmasterJ

Image
Galleon is a converted Counter-Strike map with enemies and some weapons scattered around. There are quite a few Counter-Strike map conversions but it is so nice to see one that's not meant for PVP. SCMapDB page Original mod authors: PhantomLord Conversion authors: kmkz Date of original mod release: 2001 Date of final Sven Map release: 2017 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Galleon (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 13, 2022 | 2947 characters      This map is a conversion of a Counter-Strike map. Unlike other conversions of CS maps this one actually has enemies and is modified for cooperative play. There are around 100 enemies in the map and players must hunt them all down.      The map is expansive with plenty to see. Some of the architecture looks bad, like the staircases. Some of the hallways are really narrow with lots of twists and turns. In a competitive map these features would add to the challenge but in Sven the map gets more annoying the more ti

All three maps require chiseling your way out of a destructible wall that is textured like a door to taunt you (in the third map it's the wall next to the door that's destructible so you end up wasting your time attacking the door if you're thinking of the previous maps. The destructible has way too much health to destroy unless you cheat or have all 16 players hammering on it at once. I'd recommend that you cheat, but I'd sooner recommend not playing the map at all.      After breaking your way out, in all three maps you're presented with th

I started out in little fun park first and spawned in a dim room with grenades and a door. The door doesn't open. IT becomes apparent that we have to use grenades to open the door, but the door has a ludicrous amount of health. My teammate and I cheated and gave ourselves all the weapons and it took an absurd amount of damage to destroy the door and get out of the room. There is another room with a destructible door here. Thankfully it has less health but it's still annoying.      Out of the spawn room and in the park itself is a variety of strange things to look at. Ther

This map is a prime example of this.      This map consists of one large room, a (seemingly?) impenetrable glass room on a mezzanine, a big vat of inconspicuous white substance, and a slide from a platform into said vat. Climbing up a ladder gets the player onto the platform, and then jumping onto the slide gets you trapped inside of it because the top surface of the slide is intangible. The only way out is death. I was certain, the moment I saw this map, that the slide would be fucky in a way I wouldn't predict. I was right. I thought it wouldn't

This is not quite true, the snow is intangible and that is not something done on accident. Perhaps the author couldn't make slippery snow and decided to just phase it out of existence. The result is that players will fall into a box they can not get out of. I suffered this fate and had to commit suicide to get out of it, my teammate fell into this trap later as well and I took the chance to laugh at his misfortune.      The whole map is one big room. Not all of these work as of this review, as many of the world models are errors. The zombies themselves work, though, and I have to say: they're a ton of fun. It's a simple trick, but these zombies come in all sorts of neat varieties and it works great for me.      The weapons also have some neat models. It's got some fun new weapon models, a lot of which are left-handed for some reason, and enemies are used from Nexon.      The gameplay is pretty standard zombie horde defense. There are a lot of zombies, many different types, and players are holed up in a building. One thing I found interesting was that the wooden boards on the doors never got broken and successfully kept all the zombies out. In the first half of the map my teammate and I were running around shotgunning the various zombies in their assorted heads but by the second we stayed indoors a

The side-view world exists in a large, open skybox room which you can easily fall off the sides of and die. Goombas are replaced by headcrabs and turtles are replaced by zombies. Mushrooms and coins are replaced by nothing because they aren't there. There's ? blocks but they don't seem

Gordon can't jump as high as Mario so most of the platforms are unreachable without player stacks or cheats. Thankfully there is room to go around most of these obstacles, otherwise the pipes would block the players' paths and the map would be unwinnable. Watch out though, you can fall off the sides of the map and you will die. The enemies are annoying headcrabs. The map ends after players pass the flag.      There is the original Mario music in this map. It speeds up at one point, I thought that meant the map had a time limit

What I will say is that this is among some of my least favorite of RNG's work, and easily my favorite of Robootto's that I've played so far.      The map is made up of challenges divided by massive lifts, hence the name. The setup is simple: grab a bunch of weapons from the arsenal room, and then room after room, the players fight soldiers, aliens, and turrets in lightly segmented battles.      The first map is the roughest of the bunch. It begins with a strange, clearly broken mechanic where you are, I think, inside of a ventilation room where the air current is pressing you against the ceiling. Bullsquids within this room were also pushed against the ceiling- so hard, in fact, that they moved upwards into the ceiling and out
