Adventure 1 - GrandmasterJ

Looking at the screenshots one can easily think this map is just a bad remake of the first Mario game. That is exactly what it is, a poor recreation of a side scrolling level in a first person shooter.

Map review of Adventure 1

Adventure 1 is a bad remake of the first Mario level. Gordon can't jump as high as Mario so most of the platforms are unreachable without player stacks or cheats. Thankfully there is room to go around most of these obstacles, otherwise the pipes would block the players' paths and the map would be unwinnable. Watch out though, you can fall off the sides of the map and you will die. The enemies are annoying headcrabs. The map ends after players pass the flag.

There is the original Mario music in this map. It speeds up at one point, I thought that meant the map had a time limit, so I waited to see what would happen. Eventually the music ended with the original sound that plays on Mario's death. The map didn't end or anything, the music just stops there.

Early on, my teammate mentioned how bad the textures looked. He asked why they had jpg compression on them. I had to check myself, the textures look a little grimy because of that.

Honestly, I didn't have high hopes for this map, and it failed to live up to my expectations. The best thing I can say about it is that it is playable. Give this one a pass, unless you like incredibly short bad maps. Also, there is no adventure.

Pros:

  • Faithfully recreated the first level of Mario's level design and layout.

Cons:

  • Side scrolling platformer level design only works if the player characters can jump high.
  • Combat was mostly headcrabs and wasn't engaging
  • Overall there was nothing engaging or fun about the map

Score: 2 / 10
