Resident Evil: The Awakening - Dunkelschwamm

There are many Resident Evil maps in the Sven map database, but this is the first and has the highest score (of the time of writing this paragraph). Players are Bravo squad, the lost and dead STARS member seen at the beginning of the first Resident Evil, can we overturn canon and survive? The result is the marriage of two distinct flavors of jank, some systems that fall apart in tandem, and some middling horror-action in some middling mansion environments.      The map begins with the players in a spawn area where they must choose a class from three (the one with the gun and the medkit is the only acceptable answer- this class system is silly and unbal

So I dipped my toes into the Sven Co-op Resident Evil maps by doing the ones with the lowest STARS ratings first, now we are jumping to the map with the highest rating. It's certainly better, but it is essentially a big maze with an item hunt while players have to deal with ammo and guns that don't respawn and some limiting character classes.      Players start off in a big metal box with some buttons, the problems start early as the difficulty buttons s

Welcome to a land of dark and grainy textures, emphasis on grainy. This is a short and spooky map where players must explore a decrepit facility while dealing with hostile creatures. SCMapDB page Author: RNG Date of final release: 2010 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Mystic Radar (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | September 17, 2022 | 5489 characters      Mystic Radar is a short horror map by RNG with a charmingly cheesy story and an atmosphere of texture and grit.      The map is broken up into three parts, I would say. The first is a machine room where players must complete a series of puzzles while dodging two zombies without any weapons. The first puzzle, before the zombies appear, involves placing a block simply into a machine when the machine is opened by a valve pressed by another player. The rest of the puzzles involve finding keys or turning valves while zombies run amok. Once the puzzles in this room are complete, the map lets us know by making the zomb

Most of the gameplay is hunting for keys, valves to turn, destructible panels, or whatever else is needed to progress. Zombies show up and are generally very annoying.      When the map starts my eye is drawn to the textures. Pretty much every surface texture is grainy, lke the world is made out of static. Most everything is a dull metallic color, ranging from rust brown to not-yet-rusty dirty grey. With how dark the map is this can make the map seem mazey and confusing

Resident Evil: Directors Cut - Dunkelschwamm

This is the second and probably final Resident Evil map made by James Smith, following his previous map, Aftermath. The map is very similar to the first, keeping with a recreation of the Resident Evil mansion, but it is very much improved. However, unlike Resident Evil: Aftermath, this map is competently produced.      First of all, I think the presentation of this map is a large improvement from Resident Evil: Aftermath. The furniture is all lovely, and there's a few nice atmospheric touches like rain outside the windows and some lovely candelabras. The hal

It still leans heavily on the long and twisty hallway element though.      The map still only loosely resembles the layout of any Resident Evil game but it looks much better. The main hall treats players to some nice looking windows with rain effects behind them, it set the mood ri

Resident Evil: The Aftermath - Dunkelschwamm

There are a lot of Resident Evil maps for Sven Co-op and they mostly follow the same formula of exploring a mansion. The 'Aftermath' part of the title implies this map is a sequel but it is unclear what the previous map could be. I know that's oddly specific, but it just really gives me that impression.      The spawn area requires players choose a class. The classes are kni

He remembers the Resident Evil maps being pretty bad and I only remember vague impressions of them. So I thought I would start with the one with the lowest STARS rating.      The map starts off in a red chamber with a locked door and a hole high up in the wall. I think this is supposed to force at least two players to play but with the climbing mechanic that was added into Sven Co-op later you don't need two players to ge

Zombie Survival Subway - Dunkelschwamm

Players fight swarms of sprinting medium-tier zombies who make, I think, some of the most annoying sounds in a Sven map yet. Players get their weapons in a spawn room (instead of spawning the player with them already in possession, as most Nexon maps usually have the good sense to do), and does little to resupply them as they battle an endless onslaught of mediocre enemies.      The big selling point is the visuals, as is often in Nexon maps. The map centers around two subway cars

Players start in a room with some weapons, sniper rifle, M16 (sans grenades), shotgun, and desert eagle. There are green portals that players walk through to drop into the arena itself.      The arena is a sectioned off part of the subway to two derelict subway cars next to each other. The whole area is very well detailed, which from the credits plaque in-map and from what the map description says, this map was ported from Counter-Strike Nexon. I think the zombie models and animations

Not all of these work as of this review, as many of the world models are errors. The zombies themselves work, though, and I have to say: they're a ton of fun. It's a simple trick, but these zombies come in all sorts of neat varieties and it works great for me.      The weapons also have some neat models. There's a few scripted weapons that also function a bit new. For the most part, they're all just l

It's got some fun new weapon models, a lot of which are left-handed for some reason, and enemies are used from Nexon.      The gameplay is pretty standard zombie horde defense. There are a lot of zombies, many different types, and players are holed up in a building. One thing I found interesting was that the wooden boards on the doors never got broken and successfully kept all the zombies out. In the first half of the map my teammate and I were running around shotgunning the various zombies in their assorted heads but by the second we stayed indoors a

The map is in the style of a dust map, though the layout is generally unfamiliar to me. The map takes place at night and the objective is to kill a megazombie called "Hide". There are three other zombies, though they are technically superfluous to the map's success.      Fighting the zombies in thi

It uses textures and inspiration from de_dust but it is not actually de_dust. It is an arena with wide corridors and some crates with just four enemies sprinkled around and each one has an astronomical amount of health.

It Has Leaks - Dunkelschwamm

Of course, those days are long ago, and we've come a long way. Does It Has Leaks hold up?      The first thing you'll notice about IHL is its striking style. It has a decidedly Quake/Hexen 2 feel to it, and takes place entirely in dingy Eldritch libraries. Everything from the red skybox to the lighting is fantastic throughout the map, and the visuals hold up even after all these years.      The enemies you'll be fighting throughout are alien controllers, pit drones, voltigores, and a baby gargantua. Along the way there's also some

I don't remember much of it or how I felt about it then. But now that I've played it again it is solidly all right.      Before I even get into the map itself I want to talk about the textures. The whole map takes place in a library and there are some interesting textures used for the library shelves. There are jars of weird liquids, scrolls, and of course books. The lighting is very moody and really sells the fantasy medieval library vibe the map has. The architecture is somewhat alien and reminiscent of Quake in some places, like the catwalk

A Day in Hell - Dunkelschwamm

What I will say to its credit is that it mostly works, it's about average quality, it's full of rookie mistakes, and it's full of action.      A Day In Hell is split into two maps: The first is a daytime assault on a house complex full of grunts. The second map is the same house, but at night, and full of zombies, bullsquid minibosses, and gonome bosses. That same second map has a secondary mission which I'll talk more about

It does a few things I like and it does a few things I don't like, most times it seems to do things that have good and bad sides to it that all balance out. I played the e1 map first, it started us off in a nice spawn room with a decent selection of weapons and no ammo, which is a chronic problem in most Sven maps, lack of ammo. Taking a single step forward activates a cutscene explaining our mission. Swimming through the portal flanked by two scream-mask wearing guards you get to a h
