Biglolly Coop - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Big Lolly is a conversion of a standalone mod made for the author's brother's birthday. It's short and sweet,  pun intended . SCMapDB page Original mod authors: Cayle George Conversion authors: Royal-soldier Date of original mod release: 2003 Date of final Sven Map release: 2009 Maps in package: 6 Map review of Biglolly Coop (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 30, 2022 | 3752 characters      Biglolly Coop is a Sven Co-op port of the Half-Life mod Big Lolly. My understanding is that Big Lolly was originally made as a birthday gift to the author's brother. If my brother were to make a mod like this for me, I wouldn't even know what to say.      The port is very straight-forward and faithfully plays out the original mod in Sven Co-op. I remember playing this port a while back and having difficulty with it, but seeing that it has been patched makes sense as to why this time around the experience was so smooth and flawless. I do have to say,

Activist - GrandmasterJ

Image
In this map players take on the role of activists and attempt to free animals from being experimented on. One of the objectives states "DON'T release a deadly plague" but you can ignore that since it's required to complete the map. SCMapDB page Author: Frel Date of final release: 2008 Maps in package: 3 Map review of Activist (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 21, 2022 | 4995 characters      Activist is a map that has two objectives. One of the objectives is to NOT release a deadly plague. From the very beginning I suspected that we had to unleash a biohazardous threat as a matter of course to complete the map.      The map starts players off in a well stocked armory with shotgun, uzi, and mp5 plus bullets and shells. Right from the get go it has plenty of ammo to start players off with and there are resupply points periodically throughout the map. Players are never given more weapons, but HEV and ammo are given generously. At least the amo

Search N Destroy - Dunkelschwamm

Image
There are a lot of really cool and interesting things done in this map that are not found in other maps like having an open world, player classes, and non-linear objectives. Some mechanics work better than others but it all comes together to make a truly unique map. SCMapDB page Author: Hezus Date of final release: 2020 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Search N Destroy (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 8, 2022 | 6589 characters      Search n Destroy is an objective based control point map which takes place in a desert-y setting reminiscent of Counter Strike's Dust maps with Opposing Forces grunts as the main enemies. To complete the map the players must plant C4 on several enemy weapons caches, find weapons throughout the map and return them to the base, conquer and defend 4 control points, and finally defend the spawn base from an enemy attack. During the offense portion of this you must also contend with grunts being dropped off by respawning Osprey

A Soldier's Tale - GrandmasterJ

Image
A Soldier's Tale is a standalone mod converted to work in Sven Co-op. While the map set is pretty solid it does take place in Black Mesa, which is a setting that has been done to death and back. SCMapDB page Original mod authors: Matt Arnold Conversion authors: Mikk for mapping and Outerbeast for scripting Date of original mod release: 2000 Date of final Sven Map release: 2021 Maps in package: 7 Map review of A Soldier's Tale (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by GrandmasterJ | January 1, 2022 | 2423 characters      A soldier's Tale is a fairly well done map set. I will admit I am pretty tired of seeing Sven maps take place in Black Mesa but this one was well done and convincing. Although I do feel the need to point out a room in one of the maps accessible only by a vent, that is some strange architecture.      The story follows a squad of HECU grunts being sent into Black Mesa and meeting both the Xen aliens and whatever is with the aliens from Opposing Forces. There ar

Borg Cube - GrandmasterJ

Image
Borg Cube is a Star Trek themed map taking place inside a Borg spaceship, the famous Cube. The map uses a whole slew of new textures and models to recreate the ship and even gives players a phaser. SCMapDB page Author: Agamemnon Date of final release: 2007 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Borg Cube (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | December 30, 2021 | 2863 characters      Borg Cube is a very fun map with custom models and sounds that really bring to life the Star Trek setting.      Most of the combat is tight quarters with Borg crammed in. Some Borg run, lots of them have ranged attacks, a few are slow and easy to kill, others run in and murder the player. This map is really aimed for more than two players, two at minimum are required but the enemy density and strength are best dealt with more.      The weapon of choice here is mainly the gauss cannon, if you can land continuous headshots on the Borg they go down pretty quick. The Mp5 is fairly useless when you get

Fun Waterpark - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Some maps are made for a liner experience, walk through the map while accomplishing objectives/killing dudes. This map opts for the opposite, it is an open map with no objectives to accomplish and nobody to kill. It's a waterpark! SCMapDB page Author: FuChSS Date of final release: 2016 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Fun Waterpark (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 28, 2021 | 2700 characters      fun-waterpark is a map which has a singular goal which it achieves ruthlessly and efficiently: make a fun waterpark. Waterpark attractions are faithfully recreated in a very simplistic and care-free style which all enhances the summer fun atmosphere.      The real star of the map is the water attractions. To that end, there are tube-slides which propel the player along with surprisingly few hiccups. There is a set of large, blue, parallel slides in one of the corners of the park which seems difficult to ride without taking damage- not an issue, really, since

2bases - GrandmasterJ

Image
This map is exactly what it describes, two bases in a large arena with human grunts infinitely spawning in. The name starts with '2' which places it quite high in the alphabetical listing of maps.  SCMapDB page Author: Sharpe Date of final release: 1999 Maps in package: 1 Map review of 2 Bases (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | November 28, 2021 | 1972 characters     This is a very simple straightforward map where the players are given loads of ammo, health, and HEV to fight tons of human grunts.     I really appreciate this map for what it is trying to do. There is no end of the level and no end to the grunts, it is just a neverending deathmatch. I really like how the author didn't skip the underbarrel grenades. I absolutely love using them and most of my time on this map is spent bunnyhopping around and lobbing grenades. After a little bit of playing I got really good at hitting the grunts directly and being rewarded with a rain of gibs. The map design

SWars Installation - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Swars is a map about some sort of war set somewhere in space. We have these soldiers in white armor that from the above picture we know are called Stroopers. They should make a movie or two out of this map. SCMapDB page Author: Dr.Strangelove Date of release: 2003 Maps in package: 3 Map review of Swars Installation (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 27, 2021 | 2119 characters      When I think of what I'd like from a Star Wars themed map, I think this is a great proof-of-concept of that: A powerful laser weapon, fighting Storm Troopers in large, brutalist imperial architecture. Throughout, these maps demonstrate some very interesting Star Wars themed brushwork and effects. The models, textures, and sounds are also very evocative of the classic Star Wars aesthetic. On top of all of that, the map is not too long so it doesn't overstay its welcome.      The levels mostly consist of gunfights with the Storm Troopers (X-Shocktroopers) using a blaster (G
