Garg Football - GrandmasterJ

Image
There really isn't much of anything for players to do but watch baby gargs play football. They do play it, they play slow and stupid, but they are still actually playing the game, its amazing! SCMapDB page Author: Mad Jonesy Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Garg Football (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | March 5, 2022 | 2316 characters      Garg football is a fun and charming game of football, the soccer kind of football, between two two-garg teams. It's amazing how well it works. It's definitely not perfect, but the gargs do try to kick the ball and more often than not, it goes towards the goal. The gargs do have a tendency to kick the ball as soon as they run up to it, usually towards their own goal and in one instance a garg in my server did score a goal for the opposing team, but they also have an equal chance of running past the ball and coming at it from the correct direction. The fact that it worked at all amazes me. T

ZS Lastclue Zombie Scenario Map-2 - GrandmasterJ

Image
Players spawn in an arena with a big monster labelled "Alien Boss' stands facing a wall. The goal is to kill this boss. Players have some nice custom weapons and zombies begin to infinitely fall into the arena. SCMapDB page Author: Nexon Date of final release: 2017 Maps in package: 1 Map review of ZS Lastclue Zombie Scenario Map-2 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 20, 2022 | 2589 characters      This map is a simple arena battle. Players are dumped into a pit with a large creature called an "alien boss" it has 600000 health. Zombies will rain down into the arena at set intervals, flooding the area with zombies.      There are some new weapons in here, the large axe that replaces the pipe wrench is my favorite. It is powerful enough to blow the zombies to pieces and swings much faster than the wrench. The crowbar replacement, a mace, is worthless. The machine gun is the best one, it's the only gun that can really lay sustained damage

Afrika Corps Bonus - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Afrika Korps is a map series about fighting Nazis under General Rommel out of Northern Africa. This bonus mission is more of the same thing. The gameplay is exactly the same. SCMapDB page Author: MysticMDT and SiC Date of final release: 2008 Maps in package: 3 Map review of Afrika Korps Bonus (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 20, 2022 | 2649 characters      Afrika Korps Bonus is exactly what it says on the tin: a bonus map for those who liked Afrika Korps. It feels a lot like Afrika Korps' second map, in that it's just a straight level of the mapset's iconic objectives rehashed in another formation. It sort of reminds me of those Zelda Rom Randomizers that people get that mix up the Zelda dungeons. This is like a mixed up version of Map 2 from Afrika Korps.      For those who don't know Afrika Korps as a mapset, it's a WW2 themed objective-walkthrough mapset prioritizing stealing documents and destroying German tanks, radios, and weap

Afrika Corps Bonus - GrandmasterJ

SCMapDB page Author: MysticMDT and SiC Date of final release: 2008 Maps in package: 3 Map review of Afrika Korps Bonus (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 20, 2022 | 1679 characters      Afrikakorps Bonus should probably be included in the main Afrikakorps map set. It's really similar to the first and second main Afrikakorps maps and blends right together with them. The objectives are set up the same exact way, destroy targets, steal documents. The weapons are the same, the arsenal does not grow in the Bonus Mission. Curiously, there is a rocket launcher in this map, but like the other Afrikakorps maps it too will disappear when somebody grabs it. Just like the other maps I died after I picked it up and nobody got to use it at all. It's so incredibly disappointing every time it

Metal Bar - GrandmasterJ

Image
Metal Bar is a reference to a genre of music and a drinking establishment, not a material and an object. This map features two bars with speakers blasting some heavy metal with very low quality audio. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto and RNG Date of final release: 2006 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Metal Bar (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | February 19, 2022 | 3682 characters      I've played enough maps made by Robootto to know I'm probably not going to have a good time. But RNG also helped make this map, and his maps are amazing. RNG's influence is probably a big reason why I think this map is one of Robootto's best maps.      The map design is simple, start off in a small park with a couple doors. One door is locked up tight and never opens, another leads to a small guitar store, and the other leads to the first metal bar of the map. The map description says there are two, its pretty difficult to find the second one and I would never have looked

Aerodock 1 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Aerodock has an interesting visual aesthetic, relying heavily on Xen textures. The map is supposedly set in space, in some sort of aerodock, but the inclusion of mundane furniture and features muddies the concept. To the best of my knowledge there is no Aerodock 2. SCMapDB page Author: tsy_4 Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Aerodock 1 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | February 19, 2022 | 3526 characters      Aerodock-1 is a walkthrough map with plenty of backtracking, fun combat segments, and garish visuals. Set in some kind of space cargo barge, Aerodock-1 sees players battling all kinds of aliens and humans alike as they unlock parts of the ship using keycards and destructible shield generators. Players spawn with the handgun, the 357, and the MP5. Over the course of the map, their arsenal grows proportional to their progress, even including the barnacle.      The map starts on the wrong foot out the gate, with robogrunts swarming sp

Gargantua Pit - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Gargantua pit is a simple arena with two gargantuas stomping around. Use a wide variety of weapons to bully them into submission.  SCMapDB page Author: Jake Andres Date of final release: 1999 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Gargantua Pit (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 29, 2022 | 4677 characters      Garg Pit (or, gargpit) is a map with a very simple purpose: put players in an arena full of respawning gargantuas, and then sell that the victims of this hell are the gargantuas. I think it does that pretty well.      The setup is simple: A donut shaped outdoor arena of immense size houses a central tower with two entrances. Within the tower is the player's spawn: a safe haven away from the hazards of gargantuas or bullsquids. In here a plethora of ammo spawns, as well as HEV and Health flowing from wall chargers as freely as if from Dionysus's own krater. From this oasis the players are able to teleport to one of two elevated positions of their ch

Adam's Puzzles - Dunkelschwamm

Image
There aren't really any puzzles in this map. The map is all about answering trivia questions. Each room has at least four paths to go and only the one labelled with the answer will allow the player through unharmed. SCMapDB page Author: Adambean Date of final release: 2009 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Adam's Puzzles (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 29, 2022 | 4345 characters      Adam's Puzzles is a cute high-concept server map, where the concept is multiple choice questions. Room after room, players are treated to an interesting vignette setting and a multiple choice question. By choosing one of the doors, you seal your fate- you either chose correctly and continue to the next question, or you chose incorrectly and fall into a certain death trap. It's very straight-forward in its concept. For winning, players are treated to a lounge area with security cameras for watching other players struggle with answers, a swimming pool, a pornog

Persia - GrandmasterJ

Image
Persia is a walkthrough map set in a Middle Eastern city with tons of snipers around. There are a lot of enemies on rooftops and hiding around corners making progression tough and tense. SCMapDB page Author: Skacky Date of final release: 2008 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Persia (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 23, 2022 | 4567 characters      Persia is a great looking map with solid combat and a lot of platforming. There are no new spawn points so all the good parts of the map are interrupted on death with the same platforming sequence again and again.     The map is supposed to look middle eastern and it totally does. I feel like in some maps set in the middle east it always looks like a warzone but this map felt more like Prince of Persia. The buildings were large and imposing with those fun stylized windows like you see in Aladdin. There was a really nicely made tank in the beginning and lots of sandbags, but I never felt like I was in a warzone, mor

Hellmouth - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Hellmouth is a map that takes place in Hell! Players must defend a statue at the mouth of Hell before venturing in and killing a bunch of monsters. SCMapDB page Author: Ike Brovlofski Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Hellmouth (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 22, 2022 | 4392 characters      Hellmouth is a 2-part map series. The players take on the role of angels sent to battle back the forces of Hell from a great big portal. The portal is a fun effect: multiple transparent brushes in front of one another, making an optical illusion.      The first map is a defense/horde mode. Apparently the monsters are supposed to target the Chumtoad statue in the middle of the defense area, but they don't (anymore?). In my estimation, this is for the best, as I do not want to spend this map defending against the updated and boosted Sven Co-op 5 enemies while they can attack a helpless target and trigger a lose condition. The players face

Search N Destroy - GrandmasterJ

Image
There are a lot of really cool and interesting things done in this map that are not found in other maps like having an open world, player classes, and non-linear objectives. Some mechanics work better than others but it all comes together to make a truly unique map. SCMapDB page Author: Hezus Date of final release: 2020 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Search N Destroy (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 9, 2022 | 5763 characters      I like the idea of this map. Players start in a military base on the outskirts of a large middle eastern town. There are 6 piles of crates to destroy and four areas you have to capture. The gameplay is a scavenger hunt to find the objectives and also the four unlockable weapons.      When the map first starts out players spawn in a room with instructions and difficulty voting buttons. Any difficulty higher than the lowest has a cap on respawns and let me say I can not imagine playing this map without infinite respawns. There is

Geothermal - GrandmasterJ

Image
Geothermal is a short mod converted to run in Sven Co-op. The goal is to remove a power core from a geothermal plant, I don't know what kind of geothermal power generator requires a core but here we are. SCMapDB page Original mod authors: ChickenFist Conversion authors: Outerbeast Date of original mod release: 2016 Date of final Sven Map release: 2021 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Geothermal (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by GrandmasterJ | January 8, 2022 | 3832 characters      This is a fun little map where your objective is to remove a power core from a geothermal power plant. I don't understand what possible core a geothermal power plant can have, are we stealing the soul of a volcano here?      The basic gameplay of this map is exploring a mostly empty underground laboratory setting looking for the next objective. It's a scavenger hunt for buttons to open doors or turn off obstacles. Players start with only a medkit and eventually find a crowbar, pistol, magnu

Sewer Systematic: Toxicidia Sektor 516 - GrandmasterJ

Image
This map advertises being a sewer level where players have to rescue scientists in the sewer. The architecture doesn't really evoke a sewer feeling but it looks great anyway. SCMapDB page Author: RNG Date of final release: 2007 Maps in package: 3 Map review of Sewer Systematic: Toxicidia Sektor 516 (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by GrandmasterJ | December 13, 2021 | 2738 characters      RNG makes some amazing looking maps with real dumb stories. I don't think I ever felt like I was in a sewer, although that is probably for the best.      This map series, like most of RNG's work, has some very interesting and impressive architecture, unique looking rooms, and tons of detail. The style and layout is heavily reminiscent of a fever dream, there was one part where a hallway ended with a window looking into a room full of scientists. There is a door behind them that opens up to reveal a turret that mows them all down. The turret then shatters the glass and the way forward

Haunted - GrandmasterJ

Image
Haunted is an interesting concept. The players fight ghosts (normal enemies made transparent and glowy) but it takes place in some mountain facility instead of a location that is more traditionally known for ghosts, like a house or a castle. SCMapDB page Author: Fourth Letter Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Haunted (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | December 5, 2021 | 2014 characters      I like this map a lot, but I am so irritated at the player spawn being swarmed by gonomes right off the bat. You respawn with a crowbar in hand so you ahve to change to a shotgun while being tickled by gonomes and zombies. It's a huge pain and not a great start to an otherwise solid map.      There is one puzzle that isn't signposted very well. There is a button on an electrical box that starts a fire. The key here is to push the nearby explosive crate into it and that will destroy the grating on the door above. It took a while to figure that out.
