Adventure - GrandmasterJ

Image
When a map has a name as simple and powerful as 'Adventure' it better live up to it. This is a walkthrough map where the gimmick is that each room is thematically unrelated to the last. SCMapDB page Author: Acky Date of final release: 2002 Maps in package: 3 Map review of Adventure (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 30, 2022 | 4348 characters      This map has a simple premise: adventure. That made me think that I would be fighting through thematically disconnected rooms in some sort of adventurous manner. I would say it fulfilled it's goal.      The spawn room is a room full of doors, there are four doors with teleporters behind them, one to the level, and another to an armory. The armory is well stocked for one person, but with two people we chronically had the problem that one person would get in first and take everything and the other would be left with a crowbar. Even the weapons disappeared after being taken. The respawn rate for the suppli

After Gordon Freeman finishes up his work at Black Mesa he goes home to his rental. His neighborhood is quite terrible and mobs of police, alien, and criminal wake him up. It features a small city block where Gordon lives in a crummy rental place when everything attacks.      I can't tell if my comrade and I finished this map or not. We certainly did everything that we can tell we can interact with and killed enemies until they stopped respawning. Best we can figure the map is just kinda over at some point but never actually ends. We spent a long time chasing wild geese if that's the case, and I'm compelled to believe that it is the case.      The crux of the map is built on pushing against respawning hordes of enemie

I feel like I have unearthed a forgotten relic. One of the main reasons I wanted to play this particular map is that the description states that "After surviving the ordeal at Black Mesa, Gordon returns to his rental for a night of sleep." I found it incredibly funny that after the end of Half-Life 1 Gordon just goes on home. "Oh man, what a day at work, time to go home and sleep."      The map opens up with players spawning in Gordon's rental, a claustrophobic two story house with barely enough room for pl

Icearena - Dunkelschwamm

Ice arena is a simple map that attempts to recreate a hockey rink. Due to limitations of the game engine and the author's modus operandi you can not actually play hockey in this map. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2002 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Icearena (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 7, 2022 | 3155 characters      Ice Arena is an idea that doesn't entirely work in current builds of Sven Co-op because of how the pushable brushes work, and I'm not sure it would have worked any better in the old versions. The idea is that the map is an ice rink and there are pushable brushes for hockey pucks. The players can drag these colossal pucks into the goal posts, though doing so really doesn't accomplish anything or update a score ticker or anything. Not that it has to by any means, obviously in real life when you play sports you keep track of points yourselves. I'd just like to emphasize how barren and simple this

There are draggable pucks that my teammate and I dragged into a goal, nothing happened. There is a hall off to the side that leads to an elevator and a really awful ladder going up to another hallway. At the end of this hallway is a last puck and a hole that will drop a player to their death.      Also there is a spawn point inside a goal, when the map first loaded my teammate was stuck in the net and had to suicide to get free, only to spawn in there again.      If you've read the description you would probably notice I didn't mention an o

Half-Quake Amen Coop - Dunkelschwamm

Half-Quake Amen is a rather famous mod with a focus on save scumming and nasty traps. I haven't played the standalone mod but from what I hear it's really focused on messing with the player. Now it is available for Sven Co-op at the expense of some of its features. It's funny, tricky, and does a lot of weird gonzo shit that pokes fun at the concepts of "intuitive gameplay" and "rule of fun" which were all the craze when Half-Life had come out. Often the player is comedically punished for relying on intuition, and the mod reminds you from beginning to end that this is Half-Quake and you are her

He kept trying to get me to play and but I wasn't all that into the modding scene at that point. So when we got back into Sven and saw that Half Quake was converted we finally got to playing it.      I had fun. I love the concept of the creators themselves having a conversation with the player, not in a self-insert cringy kind

Hamsters - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Hamsters is a classic map made for Counter-Strike 1.6 by the legendary mapper, Nipper. The whole map is a hamster habitat floating in space. The walls are transparent making enemy movement obvious. It's a really good map for Counter-Strike 1.6. SCMapDB page Author: Nipper Date of final release: 2016 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Hamsters (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 28, 2021 | 1120 characters      Hamsters is a classic Nipper Counter-Strike map. This port is faithful in its port of that map and changes nothing, making it little more than a hangout map. While crawling around in tubes does have a McDonald's playplace feel to it and the spinning wheels are very fun, this port has pretty limited options for Sven players.      If you have a hangout server, I think you should probably stick to maps made specifically for hangout servers and maybe leave this one off the rotation. I can't imagine players finding more than 5 minutes of novelty out

But I expected a few enemies or some sort of additions or upgrades for Sven. Nope, this is the map from Counter-Strike in Sven. That's it.      I guess it would be a good PVP map, but this is Sven CO-OP, I don't think I've ever actually played PVP. Pros: Classic Nipper map from 1.6 Great for PVP Cons: It's ported to Sven but has nothing added for Sven gameplay nobody plays PVP Novelty of being a hamster falls off immediately, without PVP the

1-6 - Dunkelschwamm

1-6 is a series of maps labelled 1 through 6, this is some real early Sven stuff. The author is amckern (with a small 'a') who has gone on to make really important mapping tools for Sven along with plenty of other maps. SCMapDB page Author: amckern Date of release: 2002 Maps in package: 6 Map review of 1-6 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 27, 2021 | 1561 characters      1-6 is a series of short, paint-by-numbers interconnected arenas for battling crowds of Sven-Coop's diverse cast of monsters using the equally diverse arsenal to great effect. The brushwork is of inconsistent (if not for being consistently uninspired) quality throughout, though it is hard to say that it ever nosedives into the realm of being of shoddy construction. The map does little to regulate pacing and lets the player approach room after room of angry monsters or grunts with fun weapons to get the job done. I had a lot of fun with it, but I owe a lot of that to it simply

The proportions on everything is absolutely crazy. There are tall and thing black mesa SUVs in a parking garage (that was under a room filled with drainable water), there are very steep ramps, and the best example I can give of wonky architecture; a doorway with a ramp that you have to crouch to actually go through. The map series is just the numbers 1-6 too. Who does that?      It's not the worst map I've played. But it reeks of amateur hour. I haven't played any

It was one of the first Half-Life mods I ever played, years ago. I was excited to play through it with a buddy in Sven, so I got this port. This review is following our finishing of the mod together.      The mod as a whole offers many maps; some are quite large in scale, some quite intricate, and som

I really enjoyed the custom models and fun sound effects but level design and bugs made me want to quit the game early and play something else.      The game starts off strong but the level end is a impressive portal that sucks up the players. Only it didn't work right when I did it and my teammate and I ended up pressed against the wall with no way to actually move into the portal.
