Chess - Dunkelschwamm

What else is there to say? We can now play chess in a Sven Co-op map. Of course the rules are not enforced so it's mostly anarchy. But still, pretty cool stuff!

Map review of Chess

This is a map which facilitates the honorable playing of chess in Sven Co-op. I say honorable, because this really allows for wild-west antics if your players don't adhere to the rules of chess.

There's a giant chess board, controls for each player, and controls for the game in general. There's also some screens which players can cycle through to review the rules of chess, in case they don't know how to play. Which it's a very novel concept, I don't recommend learning chess by playing it in this map.

Players press a button to join the game, which did something I'm sure. Walking onto the red carpet area unjoins the player from the game, which I did at one point, and it did something I'm sure.

The players' button controls at their side of the board allow them to choose a pawn to promote and then choose what piece they will be promoted to. This places an icon of their promoted piece above them, which is cute. There's also a button for ending a turn.

Players move pieces by walking up to them, using them to select them, and then pressing use somewhere on the board to place them. You can do this regardless of whose turn it is. You can place them whereever you want. This is where things get wacky. If you want to take a piece, you literally place it outside of the field. This map doesn't facilitate the rules of chess, rather it simulates a chess board well enough to play a game of chess. It's kinda like tabletop simulator, but without the fun physics.

I will say, though, that the map looks really nice. The instructions are printed clearly and read well. The buttons are confusingly presented at first, but make sense after a while. The overall arcane atmosphere is fun. The pieces look good, and the icons work well for the promotions.

We hit the reset button, and despite a comment suggesting contrary the reset worked in moving all pieces back to their starting point. The reset did not, however, reset the promotions.

Give this a go, I guess, if you have a really chill private server. There would be no point in running this on a public server.

Pros:

  • A basically functional chess board
  • It looks really nice
  • Including instructions on rules is a nice touch
  • Nothing was really broken

Cons:

  • Flawed by its concept. For all that this map does right, I can't help but feel that it's a terrible way to play chess, and that a terrible way to play chess is not a great map to play on Sven Co-op

Score: 7.2 / 10
