Carnival - GrandmasterJ

It's all fun and games here, except for a short walkthrough section at the end. But besides that there are three different games to play and they all give prizes! Be careful pressing that yellow button though.

Map review of Carnival

This map is a nice collection of carnival games. There is a shooting gallery with two mounted guns and a collection of red things to shoot. Each red thing destroyed spawns a goody on the ground off to the side of the booth. There is also an invisible wall to prevent players from shooting at the red things. Then we have a game where we drop satchels down some tubes that also unlock some goodies, a dunk tank that we do not seem to be able to interact with, and a booth with three slightly offset holes we have to throw a grenade through. Right in the middle of the area is an egon gun with lots of ammo.

Then there is the yellow button, it's off on the wall opposite the games protected by a piece of glass. I shot at it and that spawns lots of monsters. The map is pretty small so the swarms of monsters did go directly into our spawn area so that was a bit upsetting. But all the goodies we unlocked plus the egon gun in the middle allowed us to quickly get back to killing aliens after respawning.

The monsters also open up a new route to a teleporter and beyond a weird metallic room that I immediately die in. There is a cart on a track, do not step onto the track for it will kill you instantly, something my teammate found out just seconds after me. Here the map gets a bit linear, there are no games here only interesting things to walk and jump on except for the cart on the death rail. Opposite the cart is a breakable hatch to a room with more rail and lots of enemies. We liquified them with explosive and drove the cart forward. My teammate tried to jump out but there are invisible walls on either side of the rail that blocked him and he died immediately. I got to the end and pressed another button only to be trapped as the cart left and I forced onto the rail. That button spawned what sounded like a gargantua that my teammate killed before I could get there (he informs me it was two gonarchs and a garg). Killing it ended the map.

I really liked most of the carnival games. The shooting gallery was great, the dunk tank was either purely decoration or broken because I could find no way to interact with it, and I feel like both the grenade and satchel puzzles were very similar but were ok. The best part about these games is that they give prizes, and good ones! Underbarrel grenades and a revolver (along with various ammos) out of the shooting gallery and a shotgun and crossbow from the satchel tubes. I don't know what the grenade puzzle unlocked but it must have been something, there was an mp5 around, maybe it was that. The second room was less fun but it served more as an explorative end to the map. One that got us killed a whole bunch.

Pros:

  • Fun carnival games
  • the games give good prizes!
  • There is a second part of the map that leads to an end
  • the weapon selection post-unlocks is really good, enough to make enemies in spawn less problematic

Cons:

  • The dunk tank should have worked
  • that electrified rail does not look like it would cause instant death, both of us immediately died from it
  • enemies in spawn still sucked

Score: 6.5 / 10
