Carnival 2 - GrandmasterJ

We have another Carnival map, but I don't think this one is a sequel as the author is unknown. It has some fun rides that work well when they aren't killing players. Beware spawning in the ceiling.

Map review of Carnival 2

This is a fun little map with some carnival rides scattered around. We have a roller coaster thing, one of those centrifugal force spinners, skee-ball, a big arm thing, a dunk tank, and a ferris wheel.

I spawned inside a ceiling. For those of you who don't know, pressing 'L' will unstick the player. This is vital to respawning because of the spawn point above the skee-ball. There is another spawn point on top of a rock wall, the spawn points are very strange in this map.

But after I pressed L and unstuck myself I found all the rides were really fun. They all work and my teammate and I actually managed to stay inside them for most of the time. My favorite was the roller coaster, it goes very fast and has some steep descents, perfect for flinging unprepared players right out. It should be noted that the map has zero supplies of any sort, nothing beyond the default starting equipment which I think is kind of a shame.

Everything works well except for the skee-ball. The machines have holes for us to throw balls down but there is nothing for us to throw. I noclipped through and the holes do go down and have buttons in them, but when I tossed grenades down nothing really happened. It's just a strangely nonfunctional game with all the other working attractions.

The visuals are very basic and flat, standard dirt floor with canyon rock walls, with many instances of textures being misaligned or stretched. In short, it looks really bad.

I had a great time in those rides, they all had just the right amount of jank while still managing to be mostly successful in function. The only attraction that let me down was skee-ball and that may be due to a game update. The map looked bad and the spawn points are all messed up, but these are minor things compared to being catapulted out of a speeding coaster on a steep downhill descent.

Pros:

  • The majority of the rides worked very well
  • The rides had the right balance of spontaneous player death and everything working perfectly well

Cons:

  • the spawn points are silly and will put players in a ceiling
  • map looks bad
  • skee-ball doesn't work

Score: 6 / 10
