Bunker - GrandmasterJ

A fairly standard horde map, Bunker features a bunker from which players and allies can shoot out a the swarms in relative safety. For some reason weapons are outside the bunker forcing players to brave the ocean of enemies outside.

Map review of Bunker

True to the name, there is indeed a bunker that players spawn right outside. There are no weapons in the bunker besides an mp5 outside the front door, all the weapons are in a weird boarded up passage to a big room with a ton of weapons and ammo strewn about. Most of the level is a wide field around the bunker that is so big we can see the darkness that is draw distance gnawing at the edges of reality. Grunts of the human, robot, and heavy weapons variety spawn in droves constantly.

There are some friendlies in the bunker but they do very little. There are some turrets and even three mortars on top of the bunker that called down airstrikes. The bunker has some buttons inside, one controls a window that when opened will allow so much gunfire into the bunker, do not open that window. Another one will call in reinforcements, a handful of friendly grunts delivered via an aircraft that would look impressive if the brushwork didn't compile into shards with null faces. The grunts go into the ocean of enemies and we never see them again.

When we first started the map, I noticed that the sandbags by the entrance were floating. The map has some really flat texturing and rough blocky brushwork, but it also has some puzzling qualities. We found an area with the egon gun and noticed a strange ledge high above. We cheated up there and there was nothing, but the ledge was built weird, there was a strange unnecessary notch hidden at the back and I could see a seam that showed it was in multiple pieces. Why do this? There were other areas with similar suspicious seams and what looked to be a cave tunnel walled off that has nothing behind it, the map was intriguing but it never revealed anything other than confusing architecture.

I think the map really suffers from the bunker not being cooler. Later in the map when enemies decide to walk right up to the bunker and fire inside the spawn area gets deadly and to make matters worse we have to run backwards into the armory, which doesn't protect much from the onslaught. If spawn and the weapons were in the bunker we would be unstoppable killing machines and wouldn't be in danger of seeing reality's edge via draw distance limitations, but instead we have to choose between a cool bunker and weapons. I spent most of my time with the M16 and underbarrel grenades thank you very much. The map looked bad but intriguing, with many interesting leads going nowhere. Not that players will spend much time outside the armory, the level is too thick with enemies to survive long outside of cover.

Pros:

  • Lots of good weapons and ammo
  • cool buttons in the bunker, I liked the reinforcements
  • there is one cool secret

Cons:

  • the map was textured flatly, there were seams showing, and some misaligned brushes
  • the weapons were outside the bunker, rendering the bunker a much less viable option
  • spawn was outside the bunker and players get shot on spawning in later in the map
  • there is a ridiculous amount of enemies on the map for just two people
Score: 4.5 / 10
