Building Jumper - GrandmasterJ

This map is presented as a platforming map but it actually has quite a bit of combat. The buildings themselves are large and mostly empty boxes with some filled to the brim with a tidal wave of enemies.

Map review of Building Jumper

This map really seemed like a straight up platforming map but there was a lot of action in it as well. I thought it was a neat approach to the whole platforming game type. It is such a shame that this map was frequently more annoying than fun.

So we start in a room with a some friendly NPCs and the moment we walk into the next room we are assaulted by unarmed male assassins who spin kick us silly. We only have medkits so we run past them up a steep and lengthy spiral rampcase to the top of the tower where we have to jump to another tower. I immediately see two things, one is a long jump barely inaccessible off to one side and the other is that there are a couple of snipers. We have to platform over to another tower (and thankfully the snipers don't have great views of us) to go down another long rampcase tower.

There are lots of these towers around this map and they all take forever to climb up. In the second tower there is crowbar and a door to the ground level that was breakable but had so much health it didn't break after minutes of constantly hammering. The next tower gives us a sniper rifle and soon after that we get a shotgun. There is also a pipe wrench and a rpg unlocked by pressing buttons, or so the game claims, neither seemed to actually unlock.

Getting the shotgun is tricky, players are walking a very thin rail with some blocks forcing the players to go around on even thinner ledges. Getting the shotgun requires jumping to a hollow tower tube and using a ladder to go down into what looks like a trap. Then getting back up, going from ladder to thin ledge to thin ledge and continue on our way. If at any point we die we end up in spawn and have to collect weapons and redo all the platforming bits, sometimes multiple times if you are collecting the weapons.

After a while we got a barnacle and rappelled off each other to get to the ground level. There is a bounty of weapons, ammo, and HEV right in front of a locked door to spawn. That door only opens right before the map ends, so it is completely useless. This is the biggest problem with the map and it is a doozy. The platforming sections are hard and annoying, the weapons are spread across the level and even the pile outside spawn is missing some key items, and the door out of spawn opens only at the end of the map. Getting around is awful and I cheated to noclip through that door constantly. I even thought we must have sequence broke because of the barnacle rappelling but my teammate just thinks the map is a mess and I have to agree.

Pros:

  • I like how the combat worked with the platforming
  • lots of supplies and fun weapons

Cons:

  • the map's one and only shortcut opens up far too late to be of any use
  • getting around the map without that shortcut is a huge pain
  • I don't see a reason to have players spawn with no weapons and enemies immediately
  • the nice collection of supplies in front of spawn lack several key items
  • rpg and pipe wrench don't actually unlock when they say they do
  • the direction on where to go is so bad I thought we sequence broke
Score: 4 / 10
