Map review of DBJR

by dunkelschwamm | April 30, 2023 | 2719 charactersDBJR is a rats map which takes place inside of a bedroom and an inconsistently proportioned hoarder's office. There are a handful of silly little secrets and a room wherein players can spawn waves of enemies to fight in the main bedroom. The description said these waves happen periodically, but in many dozens of minutes playing we never saw this happen outside of our direct involvement.
The visuals of the map itself are a treat. There's a really cute textured brush for the outside perspective instead of a skybox. There's the obligatory computer running hammer working on the map itself. There's a bed you can run under for cover from some of the larger threats. There's not a whole lot of effective cover overall, but the visuals are nice.
Players are given lots of freedom. There's low gravity, seemingly locked-10 fall damage, spawn with longjumps and several explosives and boilerplate assault weapons. This is useful, as the enemies spawned in are often either high-hp or high-quantity.
The enemy waves that we witnessed are: an apache with obscene health that kills players fast due to a deficit for HEV or cover; a gaggle of high-HP gargantuas who fail to do much intimidating before being satcheled out of existence from above; some grunts and assassins who mob the area and kill players the moment they spawn; snarks; and baby headcrabs. There's additional spawner buttons for more presses, but as far as I can tell they do nothing.
In the tags and context clues from the map, apparently this is a secrets map. I did find a secret button, and a secret room I guess. Most of the secrets are pretty subdued. Maybe there's something more. I'm not sure. Don't play this map if that's what you're here for. At first I thought the enemy spawner buttons were a secret, but there's actually a ladder to easily access them.
Anyway, if you're looking for a map to jump around a giant bedroom and shoot enemies that you spawn in from buttons in the closet, this one will have some good stuff for you.
Pros:
- Some working player-controlled action wave buttons
- Good arsenal
- Good, cute rats map
- I liked the secret hoarder room
- I liked the view outside
Cons:
- The enemy waves are mostly pretty boring to fight
- If there are secrets beyond what I found, they are presented in such a way as to discourage my continued searching for them
- What secrets I did find were pretty underwhelming, frivolous "gags"
- Some of the enemy waves spawncamp players pretty hardcore
- Needed more HEV
