Break GO: Game Over - Dunkelschwamm

 

    Inspired by the very similar Breakfree 1 and 2, in this map players ride an elevator up through some deadly obstacles. Elevators in Sven Co-op are prone to killing players so only the luckiest folks will make it to the end.

    Break-Go: Game Over is a map inspired by Breakfree. I would characterize it almost like a fanmap, for how much of Breakfree's gimmick it apes. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but it does feel pertinent to point out as it very succinctly characterizes this map.

    Much like Breakfree, Break-Go features a floating loser pool which players respawn in and which moves parallel to the main gameplay elevator. The elevator houses the players, goes up, and stops at the top where players can kill a scientist and flip a switch to end the map. The scientist isn't a foe, but killing him is nevertheless an option.

    Being that the map is heavily dependent on the elevator, it's a janky experience and doubly so if you aren't the server host, with the elevator constantly stuttering and you're not sure if it's because the player is somehow jammed in it and about to explode violently (which only happened to me once). The obstacles along the way sometimes instagibbed me and sometimes just pushed me around. There's one part where there are two improperly rendered sprites and after choosing the wrong one I was poisoned, but my teammate teleported ahead of a wall obstacle. It was super lame. If I hadn't noclipped back into the game after that, I would have never played the end of the map because after a stunt like that I'm probably never going to play again myself.

    It was a pretty inconsistent experience. I was ready for it to be over by the time it was. If the elevator wasn't such a mess in sven, maybe this would be a moderate experience. As it is, it's just a pretty bad experience. There isn't much brushworkwise to look at, and the few gimmicks it adds aren't any fun. I'd give this one a skip.

Pros:

  • The music was alright I guess
  • It technically works

Cons:

  • Elevators aren't very good to make maps around in Sven due to how broken they are unfortunately. Maybe it plays better on earlier versions
  • Doesn't add anything to the execution of Breakfree that I think was worthwhile
  • The teleporter gimmick was really bad
  • Just a sort of plodding, stressful, boring, bland, unsatisfying experience
  • Ends on an endless broken map link if you don't have wired on your server maplist
