I'm a big fan of Resident Evil, but I've been a bit down on Resident Evil Sven maps. I'm doing my best to like them I really am. Unlike the others, this map is not a linear walkthrough map but instead a never ending horde map with some fun objectives scattered around the map. It's probably my favorite Resident Evil themed Sven Co-op map so far.
Players spawn in a tiny room with a lady named "Kill me to end the map", a nearby hole drops players into a three way choice of spawn points around the main map. There is also the wrench here which is reskinned to be a chainsaw, that's fun. The map itself is city based with what is described as a farmhouse but looks more like a historic ruin in a park. The map is filled with enemies, zombies, chickens (headcrabs), hunters, and at one point there was a robot and sometimes a big monster that was a gargantua reskin. It also has some music in the farmhouse.
Players start with nothing, so after the wrench in spawn they have to scavenge in the city. There is a box of supplies on the second story of the farmhouse shack, in a corner behind sandbags next to the one friendly NPC shooting the enemies in the map, and one in a tunnel near zombie spawning hallways. The shotgun, sniper rifle, magnum, tripmines, mp5, M16, grenades, pistol, and minigun are all around the map. The map rewards exploration with multiple secrets and new areas. At one point we opened a locked door to reveal a scientist who asked us to protect him as he ran out into the street filled with zombies.
The biggest problem of the map is the mini-missions. Most of the missions are to protect friendly NPCs named 'Whores' from waves of enemies. This is very hard to do. The enemies come fast and thick and using explosives can get dicey when they get too close. There is no health or medkits so your health will only dwindle as you play. There was another quest we got to destroy a robot, I think we did because a robot grunt showed up later and we killed it and it never respawned. But sometimes we would get the text telling us to kill his robot again. Some of the quests repeat, which is nice, but on more than one occasion the quest didn't restart properly, mainly the whores didn't spawn in right.
The map had good exploration elements, it works for an endless horde map as well, but I feel the quests are the weak point. Maybe with more people and overwhelming firepower the quests would be a breeze, I like opening up doors and new areas but trying to protect whores in inconvenient places for 10 minutes or scientists that run straight at danger is not fun. I;m not sure they reset correctly if they reset at all, at the very least the game text is bugged. When I was bored of the map I killed the lady at spawn and the map immediately ended.
Pros:
- fun map to explore
- secrets and new areas open up
- good supply distribution
- fun custom models and music
Cons:
- I don't think the quests work quite right
- guarding NPCs is not fun
Score: 6.5 / 10
