Barney Beach - Dunkelschwamm

This small slice of map is a recreation of the World War 2 beach landings at Normandy. It was converted from the 'War in Europe' and renamed to 'Barney Beach' for some reason, there are no Barneys here at all.

Map review of Barney Beach

Barney Beach is a map where players endlessly throw themselves at a beachhead where enemies spawn in over and over over again. I'm not sure what the goal is, or if there is one. It really seems like the goal is to endlessly throw yourself at respawning soldiers.

It's cute. It's a little beachhead map with boats players spawn in before hopping into the water and storming the beachhead.

Players are given MP5s and Crossbows, the latter of which are great for splash damaging soldiers, and the former of which is great for gunning down individual grunts. None of the weapons given are great for dealing with large groups of soldiers, which is what players are confronted with due to their large respawn rate and gathering at the front of their base. They literally spawn out of the sky, so if you move up on the base after securing it enemies will just rain down on you and kill you. The front of the beachhead fortress is blocked with a big dune of sand which players and enemies alike can use for cover. This is advantageous for enemies who rain grenades on the player (aided also by random mortar fire) and a huge disadvantage to players. The only way I saw to counter this was to use climbing or boosting to get atop one of the hedgehogs further back in the beach to get a view above the big sand dune to get shots off. Still, raining crossbow explosions on them from near the back of the map did basically nothing to slow their rampant regrowth. Eventually we caved and decided to cheat for the rest of this map. There's a couple neat secrets if players manage to run to the back of the bunker and snoop around. However, all of this would be off limits to me without cheating.

The map looks fine, though it's very unnatural how it just sits between two big rock walls. The enemy fort is fine, the the beachhead stuff is fine, the sand dunes looked good. Overall, though, it's hard to appreciate the map when it's a pretty standard daytime warzone that's frustrating to play.

I don't recommend this map. I think with a few small changes this map could be pretty interesting, but really it's just an annoying constant grunt dump.

Pros:

  • Map looks alright
  • Fun concept
  • I like the parts of the map the player can turn against the enemies (that I never got to without cheats)

Cons:

  • Limited equipment for such a map
  • Too many enemies constantly raining onto the fortress front
  • The good looking aspects of the map are underplayed by the big stone walls on either side
  • Map feels pretty pointless overall, even for just an enemy grind map
  • I didn't see a single Barney

Score: 4 / 10
