rrrrrrrrr - Dunkelschwamm

There are nine r's. This is a very short map that feels more like a tech demo than anything else. Players fly through arches, throw grenades in holes, and make a face spin, and that's it.

Map review of rrrrrrrrr

rrrrrrrrr is a map credited on this site to CryoKeen, though Keen's profile does not display this as one of his maps. I'm not entirely sure how to categorize it. It's perhaps a joke map, but the joke is so esoteric I don't know how to interpret it. It's like a Meredith Monk performance- I'll just be reviewing it very technically, as I concede I don't quite understand it.

After three brief puzzles, the map ends. Two of the puzzles involve images of people I don't know in a context I don't understand. I shot the first image, and after my teammate pressed a button on the second one it exploded, killing him. Inbetween there was a grenade puzzle that I had to come back and edit into this review because it left that much of an impression on me- throw three grenades into holes in the wall.

Once we proceeded forward, the map ended. It's over in the blink of an eye.

I think my favorite part of this map is that it pushes players through this surreal corridor of archways every time they teleport to a new location. I think this was a great touch. The rest of the map is over in the blink of an eye.

If you have a gag server with a lot of random nonsense, this'd fit right in. If you told your friend you wanted to play this with them, they'd probably give you an odd look after it was over. If that encourages you to play it, go for it. I don't really know what this map was going for, but if it was that then congrats to it. The abrupt ending and attitude of its sendoff definitely makes me think Keen was self-aware here.

Pros:

  • It's over pretty quickly
  • Teleport interstitials are great
  • The explosive trap was predictable, but made me laugh
  • Overall, it's pretty well made and put together for what it is. I definitely feel like it achieved something it was setting out to do
  • The grenade puzzle is pretty fun and functional

Cons:

  • The jokes are so niche I can't imagine this map will ever reach an audience that it's funny to for its intended reason again
  • It's kind of a nothing map that isn't super worth the time

Score: 5.5 / 10
