Area 491 - Dunkelschwamm

The map description simply reads "The average sven player cannot beat this." The map is a room with a box and a button, what mysteries does this map hold?

Map review of Area 491

Area 491 is a map that I don't understand, but can beat. You begin in a room with a box and a button. If you press the button you will explode, but if you break the box and then press the button you will not explode and you will complete the map. The box takes quite a few hits to destroy, but with teamwork it doesn't have to take long.

The map itself is pretty boring looking. Little effort is put into beautification, and if I had to describe the aesthetic it would be "debug room". The button gives no indication that it will explode, I'm guessing for troll reasons, and the box which must be destroyed gives little indication that it is destructible or that its demise will make the button pressable. If this is part of the joke it's the part I don't understand.

I don't think this is really a map that's meant to be played as much as a map that exists to fulfill a certain joke and the idea of it being played is more of the humor of it. Maybe if a streamer plays it they can use it as a blank canvas to riff about how crazy and zany it is that you'll explode if you try to press a button until you break a box that's off to the side. The possibilities are truly endless.

If any of what I just said makes you want to play this, I won't be the one to stop you.

Pros:

  • I'm sure this is the pure execution of an artistic vision
  • The map works and has an ending

Cons:

  • It's a nothing map made to waste time and laugh at you for wasting your time, with no effort invested to even call it a valiant attempt at a gag

Score: 2 / 10
