Metal Gate Deathmatch DM Map-2 - Dunkelschwamm

This map's long winded and confusing name is brought to you by Counter-Strike: Nexon, a spin-off of Counter-Strike that focuses on players vs. zombies. Weapons, enemies, and level design are all taken from Nexon and combines into something not quite PVP.

Map review of Metal Gate Deathmatch DM Map-2

Metal Gate Deathmatch is a couple deathmatch maps from the Nexon series. They come here with some scripted weapons, nifty new zombie enemies called "minions", a mysterious crystal by the name of "Get Score!!!", and an aesthetic that combines the sci-fi brutalist whimsy of Halo and the techno spacepunk of Unreal Tournament '99. Like most Nexon maps, they look great and come with some spectacular new toys, yet play mostly like watching paint dry unless you have a chaotic blend of players creating the energy themselves.

To be transparent, I played this map with one other player and we didn't really take the competitive spirit very seriously, instead inspecting the maps and taking pot shots at one another out of murderous, hypermasculine respect. The maps themselves are very simple in layout, but make up for it in brushwork and texture quality that feels a generation beyond Goldsrc and the occasionally spawned-in "minion" zombie to add pressure to a battle.

In each map there is the Get Score!!! crystal. This is a baffling addition choice to me, as unleashing gunfire into the Get Score!!! advances a player's score to such a degree that killcount becomes a distant memory of an obsolete goal. You can kill the other players shooting at the Get Score!!!, but while you're doing that you aren't shooting the Get Score!!!

Do not try to deplete the Get Score!!!'s health. You're clearly not supposed to do it, and any attempt to do so will only meet you with utter disappointment.

Anyway, both maps are fun, incredibly simple in layout, and feature fun (if basic) weapons. If you're into deathmatch, I could see these being fun. They remind me of some of the simpler, dumbed down console deathmatch maps in games I used to play in the mid 00's. If you're nostalgic for those days, give this a spin.

Pros:

  • Simple, dumb, straight-forward game design
  • Some really fantastic presentation with great looking environments
  • Fun new superfluous enemy and lots of fun scripted weapons
  • Evokes a different kind of nostalgia than Half-Life

Cons:

  • The dumb, straight-forward design is REALLY dumb and straight-forward
  • The Get Score!!! thing seems to dominate the game in how unbalanced it is

Score: 7 / 10
