ApacheCo - GrandmasterJ
ApacheCo is a symmetrical map with two sides, a day side and a night side. Each side has its own Apache and the map will end and declare that one side is the winner once one of the Apaches go down. This gimmick would work better if the map had weapons.

ApacheCo is your standard "kill the apache" fare found in most maps with 'apache' in their name, but this one has some twists. The first twist is that the map has two sides to it, a daytime section and a nighttime section. The other twists are that there are no weapons, there are swarms of respawning human grunts, and the outside area has a ton of other enemies running around. It's hard to do much of anything.
When I appeared in the spawn room I first noticed the detail in making the reflective floor (the room copied and flipped upside down on the other side of transparent glass) and the two teleporters. What I did not realize at the time was that each teleporter goes to a different side of the map. There are subtle lights, red and blue, to indicate either the daytime side of the map or the nighttime side of the map. I was never aware that the teleporters actually took me different places until right before writing this review, I spent the entire map not knowing there were two different sides. Truth be told, after going through the teleporter we ended up in a room full of barneys, and that's about as far as we got in the map so we never got to see the outside world legitimately.
I mentioned that there are no weapons in the map, this is so bad that it feels like the map is broken and the weapons were supposed to be there. Maybe we're missing a .cfg file that gives players more than just a handgun with 17 rounds. Right outside of the room full of Barneys there is a whole lot of soldiers and try as we might neither my teammate or I could get past them. I managed to get as far as room filled with sandbags and turrets just around the corner from the Barney room before getting gunned down from every direction. Our run of the map ended right there, we had to cheat just to experience the rest of what the map had to offer. The conclusion I reached is that there is a total of three weapons in the map, grenades, trip mines, and a minigun.
I enabled noclip and godmode and then flew around the map. The enemies respawn quickly and rush the Barney rooms. What I found was that the trek to the actual Apache was quite long and filled with tons of enemies. One thing I have to consider when reviewing Sven maps is how many players the map was meant for, maybe it plays completely differently with more players. But the more I think about this one the less I think that would play a factor. Without weapons the players would be reduced to Soviet human wave tactics and assuming they even broke through any players would have to solo the respawning enemies when they respawn. The minigun is hidden and good lucking hitting an apache with grenades and trip mines. There is also a sniper rifle sitting on some catwalks directly in front of the apache, but the sniper doesn't help taking out an Apache and there are no other weapons in the entire map. The Apaches have about 10000 health, it just doesn't seem possible to beat this map without cheats at this time.
I feel bad giving this map a bad review, but there are no weapons and that makes this map next to impossible to play correctly. There must be a missing .cfg file, the map is garbage without it. I will say the map was designed nicely, the mirrors with reflecting rooms was very cool, even if the signposting was too subtle I do think the teleporters to each side was a good idea, and the map itself generally just looked nice. But the onslaught of enemies and the lack of any type of arsenal just keeps this map from achieving a fraction of its true potential. What a waste.
Pros:
- Cool map design and fun layout
- map details, the mirror reflecting rooms were very nice to look at
Cons:
- there are almost no weapons in the map, and especially no useful ones
- no ammo in the map
- reaching the objective was way harder than it should have been
- the teleporters going to different sides was not apparent to me at first
Score: 2 / 10
