Apache Battle - GrandmasterJ

Apache Battle is an arena map where players are expected to take down an Apache Helicopter. There is nothing else to the map, take down the helicopter and another appears, forever.

Map review of Apache Battle

This map is an arena map where players fight Apache helicopters. This is not an uncommon idea but this particular execution felt incredibly lacking. I don't know if there is a missing .cfg file or if the original mapper intended for the players to only have the pistol to defend ourselves, but it sucked.

The map layout is simple, players start in a room with enough HEV batteries to fill up one player, good luck to everybody else. There are some unbreakable boxes in a corner and a ladder up to the roof and an even higher point with nothing on it and no cover. Two doors on buttons lead outside. Outside is a helicopter and infinitely spawning human grunts. There is a sniper tower with a respawning grunt, a building with a painted on door players can not get into, and a turret that is moderately useful in taking down the continually spawning helicopters that can spawn up to three at once.

Fighting three Apaches with a pistol and no ammo (there is one magazine in a rough bus stop-shaped construction outside) was not fun. The mounted gun barely helped and the real battle was sprinting through gunfire to even get there. We were constantly out of ammo and dying,

Pros:

  • The spawn area was safe from enemy fire

Cons:

  • Either the mapper didn't give players weapons or this is missing a .cfg file
  • not enough supplies like HEV and ammo
  • no way to really fight the main antagonists
  • the map description made it sound like one apache, were there supposed to be three?
  • mounted gun was not very effective and the only way to legitimately deal damage to the helicopters

Score: 1 / 10
