Multifield Scyberscazer - GrandmasterJ

The picture for this map looks awesome. It is apparently the sequel to another map, I've played that map and it feels like a beta of this map. I don't know what the title has to do with the things in the map.

Map review of Multifield Scyberscazer

I played this map expecting garbage, and I got something a little better than garbage, not much better, but I did derive a little bit of enjoyment from it.

First off, the map has stupid awful stairs, don't go up those. There is a portal that teleports you to the top of the stairs, then you climb all the way down a ladder to below the very tall awful stairs. The ladder is very long.

At the bottom is a terrible looking hallway and a room with a great selection of weapons and ammo. I have to say, actually getting a generous supply dump is a huge boon for this map. The enemies have massive amounts of health and would be an absolute nightmare without the ordinance from this room.

After this is a room full of pit drones. After this room is an outside area with what the description calls 'a usable train' this is wrong, it is a train on a track that movers very fast, continuously, and through level geometry at the push of a button. I tried to stop the train next to the button so I could jump inside, but I could not. As soon as the train enters the tunnel, it spins, and parts go through the level. It's awful. I jumped on top and then jumped to the bottom and barely survived. The train is too high off the ground to get in even when its not flipping around and going through the level.

After the train station is a very edgy pentagram room, It should be noted that the map has teleporters at spawn that periodically close and open to teleport the player closer to the action. This is a huge quality of life improvement and definitely helps keep this map playable. The pentagram room also has weapons and ammo, although it is less nice than the previous one.

Eventually we fought our way through a bunch of tunnels and into four doors that teleported us to a vent system where we killed various helpless NPCs and pressed a bunch of buttons until we got a message from the game saying there was an error. This opened up an area in spawn that allowed us to get to a tunnel full of zombies with increasingly high health and some egon guns. There was barely enough ammo to get to the end, there was one pack near the end but it was not enough for two people to burn through all the zombies.

At the end of the map was a level transition to aliensexfiendz which I have deleted after playing it. So it didn't switch, but if you want to experience this and that map then fine, whatever, get aliensexfiendz.

I would not play this map again, but its pretty good considering other maps made by the same author.

Pros:

  • The egon gun and zombie killing was pretty fun, even if I ran out of ammo and had to run back
  • good weapon and ammo supplies
  • updating teleports near spawn
  • stupid stairs bypass right at the start of the map
  • only two gonomes in the whole map

Cons:

  • stupid stairs, in donguelard the stupid stairs were mandatory and I hated them.
  • all the enemies, except the gonomes strangely enough, have far too much health. Not fun to fight
  • the train is not usable, it is not good, it is bad
  • garish, ugly, overall bad level design
  • best moments come before the train, and goes downhill from there

Score: 3.5 / 10
