Cybertech Elevator - Dunkelschwamm

This map is tiny. The map description reads: "Try fitting a populated server in this.." which is pretty funny to imagine.

Map review of Cybertech Elevator

Robootto does it again with another proof of concept map that feels baffling and hostile to the players without presuming that context. Robootto's maps get in fast, make a statement, and stop being interesting before the headscratching stops. Cybertech elevator is no different.

The map starts in a very cramped security room with cybertextures vomited onto the walls. Some of them are decent looking, and there's some fun attempts at detail in some pipes/cables which are utterly in the way of where a person would need to stand to press a button, making them impractical and the scenery somewhat surreal or absurd as a result. Robootto's maps often have a quality about them that just seems off.

There are four overall components of the map: the spawn room, the elevator door, the elevator doors, and the elevator. "But wait," I hear you saying, "You said the elevator doors twice." Yes, that's because there's an elevator door behind the elevator doors. One is a single raising door, the other is sliding double doors. None of these three doors work in concert with one another at all and can cause infuriating/hilarious situations where players attempt to brute force their way through the doors. Mercifully, the doors do not deal damage, so if a player manages to jam themselves into the door they can hold it open for everybody else.

The third aspect is the elevator. The elevator is a very, very cramped affair. The description is right to comment on this. It was very difficult managing to fit two people into the elevator. That is, once the elevator had come back. In the chaos of fumbling with the doors the elevator took off without us. While watching it ascend there were many moments where we questioned if it would ever come back down. When finally it did we ensured we were far out of the way, but still jammed in the door so we wouldn't miss our opportunity to ride. As far as I can tell you activate the elevator by jumping up and using the ceiling of it. Anyway, it rose up for a long time and then it immediately turned around and started going down without anywhere to drop off. Immediately we jeered "NO!" We had already been preparing to dismount from the elevator, jumping up and down so we wouldn't get stuck as so frustratingly happens in some Sven elevators, so it was an incredible letdown when it turned back, no pun intended.

I can't say it's a terrible map, because in 4 simple mechanisms I've found so much to write about. But I will say it was a bad map and I don't like it. I don't recommend it for personal play or server rotations.

Pros:

  • In some parts the textures kinda work.

Cons:

  • There are like 4 moving parts of this map and all of them are broken
  • It's a lot of waiting and fumbling for jank
  • After fumbling through the jank and waiting it's nothing but disappointment

Score: 0.7 / 10
