Alien Sex Fiend - Dunkelschwamm

With a name like Alien Sex Fiend this map sounds like it would be a wild ride. It certainly does look weird and interesting but it's far less of a ride, much less a wild one, that you would think.

Map review of Alien Sex Fiend

From the screenshots I get the impression we didn't see all that this map has to offer. Frankly, it's kind of a hostile slog and I don't think we'll be playing to the end. Spoilers for the review, I'm not recommending this map.

This isn't the most pointless map I've ever played, I'll say that for sure. It is very tedious, however. It begins with a sloped brush which can only be overcome by approaching it a very particular way and taking quite a bit of time every single time to climb over. It's annoying and, thanks to the way the map plays for the most part, players are likely to find themselves there.

Alien Sex Fiend seems to be a walkthrough map with a zany, dadaist style that is at once nonsensical and entirely practical. It always serves to prolong the level- be it a destructible wall which impedes the players' path with entirely too much resistance, or that terrible fucking slope at the beginning. Most of the map seems to be a linear succession of various obstacles, battles, and annoyances. Each line in the sequence feels like it ticks off the necessary aspects it needs to be a functioning thing, throws in some weird twist that an alien who has never played a game before would add despite all gameplay conventions, and then carries on. It's not great.

My recommendation: Not really worth checking out, not worth putting on a server rotation. It's somehow confusing for a completely linear sequence of events, but at the same time manages to be a boring slog.

Pros:
  • Bright, flashy colors
  • It's possible to have some decent firefights
Cons:
  • Lazy, boring pacing
  • Annoying brushwork to navigate
  • Really just feels like it's a stream-of-consciousness map
  • None of the brushwork looks very good either
Score: 1.9 / 10
