Map review of Acopz

Acopz is a couple of little maps which feel like fun little beginner maps. You can tell there's a lot of budding ideas and concepts under the surface, but the maps are ultimately unambitious and timid in execution.

For the most part you simply move through lazily lit, blocky rooms with an overabundance of ammo and supplies. Rooms often feel bizarrely proportioned, with an oddly claustrophobic vibe to some of them.

The first map features a moment of unnecessary backtracking which ultimately turns out to just be a straight march back to spawn, then through a couple rooms, right into the end of the map. The second map ends fairly abruptly after a battle with a gargantua wherein said gargantua is too tall to enter the arena. The rest of the maps really just feel like moving from room to room killing randomly sprinkled enemies here and there. Neither map feels difficult and my comrade and I beat them with only one death between us.

There was a weird thing worth mentioning that the first map didn't have a crowbar. There were vents and an explosive generator (which was a pushable crate texture, weird signposting) but you had to use weapons on them. Thankfully the map gives you way more weapons than you ever need to worry about.

I think the overall feeling I got while playing was one of slight confusion. It was amusing here and there for the ridiculous combinations of enemies it threw at us, and the bizarre blocky rooms which carried a beginner's touch, but overall it was a very forgettable couple of maps.

If you're looking for something to play with a friend, it'd probably work for a minute or two but you're better off looking elsewhere. If you're looking for something to be absolute filler in a server rotation, you've got nothing to lose by throwing this in the mix.

Pros:

  • I mean, the maps work
  • Plenty (probably too much) equipment for the players

Cons:

  • No crowbar on first map?
  • Droning, forgettable gameplay
  • Bad pacing all around
  • Weird, abrupt endings to both maps

Score: 4 / 10
