Map review of Abandoned

I haven't played many official Sven maps except for Toon Run, I had high hopes for this map. While the first half was going ok, the second half with the countdown really lost me.

The map is a scavenger hunt with shortcuts to the main spawn area opening up as you progress. This works really well for the most part, there are some areas that can get a little confusing but after shortcuts open up things get much easier to navigate.

Enemies come suddenly and in large numbers. This is definitely a map that needs quite a few players. The sudden barrages can and do overwhelm small groups of players. Luckily there are some great weapons around to fight with, the spore launcher is not often seen in Sven maps and it works really well here. The SAW comes in a little late but it gets a lot of use when it does.

Objectives are laid out in messages, locked doors will sometimes tell you what you need to do to open them. There are a few areas, like the generator area and the bridge, that need teamwork to progress.

The real meat of this map is the second part, which is a timed part that requires rushing a lot of assassins. I tried this map with a partner and we were doing pretty well until we came to this part. Tons of assassins were coming at us, there was the really nice addition of friendly turrets to help us, but there were a lot of assassins. I thought we were making good progress doing kamikaze runs in and seeing how far we got. But I made it to the next door and there were even more hallways and even hostile turrets later on. I don't know how much farther to the end was but no way were we getting there in 5 minutes. I don't begrudge the map having a timed section, but I don't think I'll be getting enough people together to see the ending of this map anytime soon.

I though it was a pretty good map but the ending sequence really bums me out.

Pros:

  • Well put together map, shortcuts really helped
  • good weapon selection, lots of ammo
  • sudden frantic combat

Cons:

  • The timed part was really a drag
  • I wanted to beat this map but I don't really feel like trying to beat a clock

Score: 6 / 10
